List of Games for Windows - LIVE games

From PCGamingWiki, the wiki about fixing PC games
Revision as of 07:30, 11 March 2018 by Garrett (talk | contribs) (restored Ace Combat: Assault Horizon - Enhanced Edition under SSA (non-Steam version exists) and added reference about retail keys for this game)

Key points

List of games that feature Games for Windows - LIVE integration; some games have LIVE removed from certain versions (see Games for Windows - LIVE removed).
For a list of Steam games that use Games for Windows - LIVE, see The Big List of 3rd Party DRM on Steam.
Players outside the Xbox LIVE Countries and Regions must use a local profile. Local profile support is listed beside the game when known.

Activation details

There are two kinds of GFWL activation, Server-Side Activation (SSA) and Legacy (Per-Title 5x5).
Both Server-Side Activation (SSA) and Legacy (Per-Title 5x5) titles can also utilize Zero Day Piracy Protection (ZDPP) to prevent access to games before the release date. Protected titles are marked as such.

Server-Side Activation (SSA) titles

Server-Side Activation (SSA) include a unique product key with the game. The key is permanently bound to the Microsoft account, similar to Steam. These games have no activation limits.
If an SSA product key is bound to an account that is not in a supported region the key will be lost (and, consequently, access to the game).
Any game with Module Authentication (MA) disables the possibility of creating a local profile to play.

Zero Day Piracy Protection (ZDPP)

Both Server-Side Activation (SSA) and Legacy (Per-Title 5x5) titles can utilize this additional protection.

Zero Day Piracy Protection (ZDPP) is an additional DRM check used to prevent access to the game in retail copies before the release date. It relies on an online service to decrypt encrypted critical game files stored on the retail disc, and when the user tries to launch the game the Zero Day Piracy Protection Tool is launched instead. This tool connects and transmits the ID of the protected game to Microsoft's online ZDP service hosted at https://zdp.gamesforwindows.com/Zdp/Zdp.svc/. The online service looks up the release date for the requested game ID and validates if the date have passed. If so the service will respond with the decryption codes for the protected files which the local tool will use to decrypt the encrypted files, allowing the game to be played.

"It's mostly older titles, yeah, but there were a few more recent ones, and Dark Souls definitely does work: It has ZDPP, but not SSA (I have NO IDEA why that page keeps getting updated to show that it has SSA, because it definitely doesn't; the Wikipedia page is the same way). The nice thing about ZDPP is that once the files are decrypted, you can back them up like save data and just overwrite the encrypted versions that are put there after a fresh installation, and everything starts exactly how it should. I've tested this myself, and I was able to get the game running from a brand-new installation completely offline.

EDIT: I don't have much going on today, so I tried my retail copy of the GFWL version of Dark Souls, and it worked perfectly. Complete offline installation on a machine that had never had anything related to GFWL installed on it before, and I was playing in about 20 minutes. I even got an old save file to load!

Confirmed myself using a retail copy of the game, the ZDPP extracted files (DARKSOULS.exe, fmod_event.dll, fmodex.dll) and a virtual machine disconnected from the Internet. The game is playable using no profile at all (progress can't be saved) as well as when using a local profile (progress can be saved). No server-side activation required to start playing the game after the ZDPP files have been extracted.
