Definition
Category Glossary
A virtual currency that must be purchased using a real-world currency. The virtual currency can then in turn be used to buy other microtransaction items, or be traded for account credit. Typically the virtual currency is locked to a single game or publisher.
Examples
Grand Theft Auto V's Shark Cards allow players to buy in-game currency, e.g. $8M GTA dollars for £80. World of Warcraft sells the Wow Token which can be traded for gold in the in-game auction house. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided one can purchase in-game 'Credits'. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain one can puchase 'Mother Base Coins'.
Notes
The virtual currencies often have a wide array of different names, depending on the game, such as gold, gems, tokens, crafting materials, credits, V-Bucks, etc.
