Tomb Raider I-III Remastered is a remastered release of Tomb Raider (1996), Tomb Raider II and Tomb Raider III: Adventures of Lara Croft with their respective expansion packs. The remaster is developed by Aspyr and Saber Interactive and published by Aspyr. It contains all the original assets, and can switch back and forth between remastered and original graphics on the fly by pressing F1 on the keyboard or the Menu button on an Xbox controller.

On release the Epic Games Store version used a work-in-progress development build of the game with incomplete assets and debug symbols, causing confusion among players. This issue was corrected on February 29, 2024 with the release of the intended build on Epic Games Store.[1] The final version of the development build was released on all platforms as Update 1 on March 12, 2024.[2]

Essential improvements

Skip legal info/disclaimer

Run the game with the -nolegal command line argument.[3]

Notes:

Run the game normally at least once and accept the EULA before using this command line argument; otherwise, the menu and inventory items will be invisible.[4][5]
(GOG version) Delete or rename legal/logo splash screens[6]
  1. Navigate to <path-to-game>\1\PIX.
  2. Delete the following files:
    • LEGAL_1.DSS
    • LEGAL_2.DSS
    • LEGAL_3.DSS
    • LEGAL_4.DSS

Notes:

This fix is only needed if the -nolegal command line argument doesn't work.

Issues unresolved

Noticeable frame stuttering

The game has noticeable frame stuttering when vsync is enabled, especially on Nvidia GPUs.
(Nvidia) Set Vulkan/OpenGL rendering to prefer DXGI interop[14]

Notes:

This completely resolves the issue.
(AMD/Intel) Force OpenGL triple buffering[9]

Notes:

This fix greatly reduces frame stuttering, but does not completely resolve the issue.

Modifications

TR1 More Visible keys

Makes the in-game key collectibles, especially grey-colored ones, more visible.

Enable linear texture filtering in Original Graphics mode (Experimental)

Hex-edit tomb123.exe[17]
  1. Open tomb123.exe with a hex editor.
  2. Search for 00 26 00 00.
  3. Replace the 3rd and 4th hits with 01 26 00 00.
  4. Save the change.

Notes:

Linear filtering has some issues with texture edges.

Keep clothing changes outside Photo Mode

This mod keeps whatever clothes selection was made within Photo Mode when returning to gameplay.

Hex-edit game files[18]
  1. Open tomb1.dll, tomb2.dll and tomb3.dll with a hex editor.
  2. In each file, search for 02 00 00 00 0F 84 02 02 00 00.
  3. Replace with 02 00 00 00 E9 03 02 00 00 00.
  4. Save the change.
  5. Repeat until all three files have modified.

Customize in-game text

Change In-Game Text[19]
  1. Navigate to <path-to-game>\1\TEX.
  2. Select the folder of the desired language: e.g. EN = English.
  3. Open the COMMON.TXT file in a text editor:
  4. Each piece of text in the game is bound to a variable. For example:
    • ACT_RUN shows text for changing controls text for Run
    • PS_* variables are related to the photosenitive warnings.
    • DC_P1 and DC_P2 are for the Content Warning messages.
    • TI_P1 and TI_P2 displays Trademark messages.
  5. Make the desired changes. For example, the text for ACT_RUN can be changed from Run to Jog.

Notes:

This can especially be handy for localizing the game in languages not officially supported by the game. Users will need to edit the other text files inside the same directory to translate the rest of the game's text.
