I have used this fix recently for Rune Classic and Rune Gold, and while it fixes the positional audio, it also breaks some sound effects/music in some scenes, and character dialogue goes off synch, sadly.

Is it alright to mention the legitimate CD-check removal?

There is a way to remove the CD-checking in the retail releases of Rune and Halls of Valhalla by editing the game's *ini file, but I'm not sure if it's alright to mention it on the game's wiki page if it's deemed illegal.
