Key points

Advantage Offers a strong level of graphical customisation.
Advantage Regularly updated and to be officially supported until 2025.[1]
Disadvantage Players are reporting extremely poor CPU optimization [2][3][4]. A response by the development team acknowledges these claims [5]. The developers temporarily stopped working on content and focused entirely on optimization. The first patch of 3 to improve optimization was released recently.[6] Reports from players vary from very little improvement up to an increase of 50%.
Disadvantage EU players are unable to use the Steam version without a fix.

[edit] Field of view (FOV)

Information Options menu features an FoV slider with values of 55 up to 74.
Information The adjustable Field of view (FOV) setting in this game is vertical FoV (like in Battlefield: Bad Company 2) rather than horizontal FoV like in most other games.
Information Vertical field of view calculator
Advantage FoV can be tweaked to values higher than in-game maximum or lower than the in-game minimum.

Fix Tweaking field of viewLink

  1. Go to the installation folder.
  2. Open UserOptions.ini.
  3. Set VerticalFOV= to the value you want.
Disadvantage Horizontal FoV is fixed at 80 inside vehicles and limited to 110 when on foot. This presents a significant problem for multi-monitor setups, even with a low vertical FoV set in the game.
Advantage This can be remedied with a tool called PS2FOV.

Fix Fix for limited horizontal Field of ViewLink

  1. Download PS2FOV from
  2. Run it at the same time as Planetside 2
  3. Horizontal FOV will be unlocked and adjusted automatically for any resolution/FoV and you can manually set your required Horizontal FoV for vehicles between 80 and 150 degrees
Note that this tool may get your account banned

[edit] Logitech 3D Pro POV pad

If you only use the ingame key bindings, the pad will just stop working after a few seconds. In order to use the POV pad of the joystick for the cockpit view, follow these steps[7]

Fix Use the Logitech profilerLink

Information In the Logitech profiler:
  1. Setup a new profile for PlanetSide 2 (use the LaunchPad.exe - not PlanetSide2.exe)
  2. Under Options -> Global Profiler Settings, select "Apply persistent profile" and choose your Planetside2 profile in the combo box
  3. For your POV pad, create a new assignment (click POV in the overview, then "Select Assignment" -> "New POV Assignment")
  4. Use the Edit button to record 4 different keystrokes (in my case I created 4 keystroke assignments for the 4 arrow keys)
  5. Assign those keystrokes to the POV pad directions "N", "W", "E" and "S"
  6. Check "FPS Style Movement" (otherwise you can only look into one direction instead of smooth movements)
  7. Make sure your new POV assignment is selected
  8. Run PlanetSide 2
  9. Set up the cockpit view keys in Planetside 2 to the recorded keystrokes
Information Input options only configurable after entering a server.

[edit] Issues unresolved

[edit] All ground and units disappear

Disadvantage Often during morning and midday, all foreground objects disappear. This includes the units, world and building. Icons remain and the map etc. stays available. This bug fixes itself after about 30 seconds.

  2. In the console, type "bcdedit /set increaseuserva 3072" and press Enter.
  3. Run Planetside 2 and see if it has worked.
  4. If it doesn't work and you'd like to revert the changes go back to the console and type "bcdedit /deletevalue increaseuserva" and press Enter.

Fix Fixing error: PlanetSide2.exe has stopped working (Windows 8)Link

Install the latest DirectX End-User Runtimes, then restart the PlanetSide 2 Launcher. If you still get the same error, do the following:

  1. Go to %WINDIR%\WinSxS
  2. Search for dinput8.dll
  3. Copy the file you find (do not move it)
  4. Right-Click on the PlanetSide 2 Icon on your Desktop
  5. Select Open File Location

  3. Right-click Planetside 2 and select Properties then ensure "Enable Steam Community In-Game" is checked here too.
  4. Relaunch Planetside 2 from Steam.

[edit] Low frame rate

Fix Fixing Low Frame Rate (FPS)Link

During the alpha stage, Planetside 2 featured special particle effects powered by PhysX.[8] These effects were removed prior to the official launch, but an option to disable PhysX was not available in the settings menu. The following fix forces PhysX off. This won't solve having a low-end machine, but will improve frame rate by 20% to 40% in most cases.[9]

  1. Close Planetside 2.
  2. Go to the installation folder.
  3. Open UserOptions.ini
  4. Add GpuPhysics=0 to the section [Rendering] on a new line
  5. Save + Close
  6. Launch Planetside 2

Fix Fixing Low Frame Rate (FPS) Second methodLink

Theres a way to tweak render limits to even lower sizes than 500. If you play as infantry 300 is still playable and is a lot faster.

  1. Close Planetside 2.
  2. Go to the installation folder.
  3. Open UserOptions.ini
  4. Find RenderDistance=500 and change it to RenderDistance=300
  5. Save + Close
  6. Launch Planetside 2
  7. Do not change Render distance ingame options, because that will reset to minimum value of 500.

[edit] Logging in with an ProSieben Sat.1 Account using the Steam version

Fix Using an ProSieben Account with the Steam VersionLink

Normally the Steam Version can only be used with Sony Online Entertainment Accounts which are designed for the US Market. However you still can play on the EU Servers using a SOE account and have lower prices because of the Euro to Dollar Conversion. If you have an ProSieben account and want to login using the Steam Version follow these steps.

  1. Close Planetside 2
  2. Go to the installation folder.
  3. Open LaunchPad.ini
  4. Add environment=psg on a new line
    1. If you already have "enviroment=something" change it to "environment=psg"
  5. Save + Close
  6. Launch Planetside 2
