Developer Mode[edit]

Max Payne 2 Developer is the special version of Max Payne 2 that can be accessed by using the -developer command line argument. The following parameters can be used:

Parameter Description
-developer Activates Developer Mode, which allows you see the games core input and output.
-developerkeys activates Developer Keys, which allows you access special functions that developerkeys doesn't allow. See Developer Key Functions below.
-screenshot Works with Developer Keys. Allows you to take screenshots with F3.
-window Shows Max Payne 2 in a window rather than full screen.
-skipstartup Skips the intro for Max Payne 2 and goes straight to the loading screen

Information Attempt to fix stretching in Max Payne 2 on widescreen resolutions. Fix also contains a optional plugin, which forces the game to use savegames from <path-to-game>\savegames
  1. Download Max Payne 2 Widescreen fixer and extract the following content in your Max Payne 2 Root Directory: scripts/mp2_widescreen_fix.asi dsound.dll dsoundhooked.dll
  2. Start the game normally

Issues fixed[edit]

The launcher doesn't start[edit]

Information Laptops using Nvidia Optimus must set the preferred graphics processor for Max Payne 2 to "Intel Integrated Graphics".

Fix Run the game in compatibility mode

  1. Go to the installation folder.
  2. Right click on maxpayne2.exe and click Properties.
  3. Go to compatibility tab.
  4. Set the compatibility mode to Windows 98 / Me and check Run this program as administrator.

Error: setFullscreen - creating the device failed: E_FAIL[edit]

Fix Install the Max Payne Widescreen Fix

  1. Download the fix from here.
  2. Extract the contents of the archive to <path-to-game>\Max Payne 2 The Fall of Max Payne
Information Disable anti-aliasing before starting the game

Error: Exception in startupInit: Directory \data not found[edit]

Fix Move the game to a folder without spaces

  1. Reinstall the game to a folder, which won't have spaces in folder path. (e.g. C:\Games\MaxPayne2).

Fix (Steam) Move the game to a folder without spaces

  1. If you're using Steam, set up a new Steam library folder, which won't have spaces in its path (e.g. C:\Steam)
  2. Remove the game and install it to a newly established Steam library folder.
  3. Navigate to that folder and go to steamapps\common.
  4. Click on Max Payne 2 The Fall of Max Payne folder and press F2 on a keyboard to change its name.
  5. Change the name of the folder to MaxPayne2.
  6. Go one folder back (to steamapps).
  7. Open appmanifest_12150.acf with text editor.
  8. Find a line "installdir" "Max Payne 2 The Fall of Max Payne"
  9. Change it to: "installdir" "MaxPayne2"
  10. Restart Steam.
  11. Set up the compatibility for maxpayne2.exe, if needed (see The launcher doesn't start).

Notes:

Information Windows notepad may have problems reading appmanifest_12150.acf. If this is a case, use other - more advanced text editor, e.g. Notepad++.

Game won't launch on AMD graphics cards, still shows up in task manager[edit]

Fix Solution 1 - Compatibility mode

  1. Navigate to the Max Payne 2 launcher (MaxPayne2.exe)
  2. Set it to run in Windows 98/Windows Me compatibility mode.

Fix Solution 2 - Catalyst Control Center drivers

Information Issue could be due to later versions of the Catalyst Control Center drivers for AMD cards.
  1. roll back CCC to 12.6.
  2. Download previous drivers from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx

Fix Solution 3 - CPU-0 Affinity

Create a file containing:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\Run with CPU-0 Affinity\Command]
@="cmd.exe /c start \"Run with CPU-0 Affinity\" /affinity 1 \"%1\""
  1. Save the file and change the extension from ".txt" to ".reg"
  2. Double click the file, hit "Yes".
  3. Right click the game executable and click "Run with CPU-0 Affinity".
  4. It sets the executable to just run on ONE core.
