Key points

Advantage With mods, and while the game is not suffering from technical issues, it is the most definitive version of the game.
Disadvantage Resolution locked to 1280x720. Use DPfix to increase rendering resolution along with many other options.
Disadvantage This port was heavily criticized at release due to glitches. A patch was released to increase stability. It is recommended to save frequently and make occasional backup copies of the save file, especially before chapter 9.
Disadvantage The Director's Cut suffers from an extremely unsaturated cold color palette that is very different from the original Xbox 360 version. See Color grading and DOF Fix for a workaround.

  • Clear font - This font is considerate of dyslexia and removes the unnecessary [ and ] for items.

Color grading and DOF Fix[edit]

The game without and with Color Fix
Information While the outdoor scenes are typically better than the Xbox version because it removed the original purple filter, the indoor scenes are extremely bleak.[1] A mod is mandatory to fix the bad color palette and extreme blurring caused by dof.

Fix Instructions

  1. Download the fix and extract d3d9.dll, dx9settings.ini, 4GB patch .exe, and ShaderOverride folder in the game's directory.
  2. If you want dof blur to be gone completely, in the PixelShaders folder inside B3405F42.txt, find the line " lrp, r3.w, r1, r0" and comment (in case you want to restore DOF later) it and add following line "mov, r0".
  3. Use the included 4GB patch on DP.exe to improve stability of the game on 64 bit system and 32 bit system with 3gb virtual address space enabled.

Controller remapping[edit]

The game's launcher allows to rebind all the buttons as well as triggers. However the game uses WinMM, instead of modern XInput API - because of that, you cannot bind Look / Draw Weapon to Left Trigger and Attack to Right Trigger, as pressing both will result in no action being taken.

Issues unresolved[edit]

York begins mumbling at sidequest 20[edit]

When York is talking to Lilly in the Milk Barn for the third and final storage room sidequest, York begins mumbling during the conversation.[2]

There are no known fixes for this, although this is a very minor glitch and does not prevent the player from doing the sidequest.

Cutscenes don't play[edit]

For some, cutscenes aren't shown. The player must press escape or enter to get past a black screen in order to get to the next section.

Issues fixed[edit]

Game crashes on startup[edit]

Fix Reinstall PhysX

  1. Go to the redist folder inside the game's folder.
  2. Run PhysX_SystemSoftware.exe to uninstall and reinstall PhysX.

Runtime Error Crash[edit]

Information If the game continues to crash, do this to make dp.exe aware of large addresses, or use the 4GB patch (see Color grading and DOF Fix.

Crash (dp.exe has stopped working)[edit]

Fix Use the CFF Explorer or 4GB patch listed above.

Fix Restart your PC

Fix Run the game in compatibility mode[5]

  1. Go to the installation folder.
  2. Right click on dp.exe and choose Properties.
  3. In Compatibility tab check Run this program in compatibility mode and choose Windows 98 / Windows Me from the list. If Windows 98 / Me does not work, Windows XP (Service Pack 3) is also reported to make the game stable, though this may cause the character can't aim up properly issue.
  4. Check Run this program as administrator.

Fix (Steam) Disable the Steam overlay

  1. Go to your Steam library.
  2. Right click on Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut and choose properties.
  3. In General tab uncheck Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
The Chapter 9 diner crash.

Fix Smoke a (in-game) cigarette

  • In Chapter 9, after Olivia gives York the "Key to Back Yard" in the diner, it is common for the game to crash during the cutscene outside, right after York says, "Let's hope it's not just something for the gossip columns." Many users have reported that smoking a cigarette (in-game) in the diner for an hour or two (about 13:00) before leaving the diner will help prevent the crash.

Fix Skip the cutscene

Crash during cutscene after Episode 1, Chapter 3 Hospital Level[edit]

Fix Set the game to windowed mode, or download a gamesave after the cutscene

After the encounter with the shotgun enemies in the hospital level, the game will load, and as it starts to play a new cutscene, will crash. Setting the game to windowed mode in the launcher seems to fix this, but the cutscenes must be skipped, or they will freeze. Here is a savegame directly after the cutscene, and here is the cutscene that you missed.

Crash during cutscene in Chapter 3 (hospital level)[edit]

Fix Select "Controller" as your controls in the launcher to prevent the crash

Crash at the beginning of Chapter 9 corrupts save file[edit]

  • A common occurrence is for the game to crash during the cutscenes at the start of chapter 9 and corrupt the save file. The cutscenes should be skipped to avoid this.
  • A save file made right after these cutscenes is available here.

Freeze in the Side Missions menu[edit]

Information Side mission information can found here.

In Compatibility tab check Run this program in compatibility mode and choose Windows XP. See Run the game in compatibility mode.

Please note that this may cause the character can't aim up properly issue.
