CryEngine 3 may set your monitor's refresh rate to 24 Hz; this results in stuttering and poor performance even if internal GPU render shows a high fps.[2] See Game chooses wrong refresh rate.

1440p Support

The -fullscreen method doesn't work for some users/versions, this fix works for 2560x1440, but has some minor shadow flickering.
Instructions[3]
  1. Right-click on the game in your Steam library and select Properties.
  2. Click Set Launch Options.. then add: -devmode and click OK.
  3. Create 3 files at your steamapps State of Decay YOSE folder (the folder where StateOfDecay.exe is located): autoexec.cfg,system.cfg and user.cfg
  4. Add the following code to each file:
con_restricted = 0
sv_cheatprotection = 0
sys_intromoviesduringinit = 0
sys_rendersplashscreen = 0

r_Driver = "DX11"

r_Width = 2560
r_Height = 1440

r_ConsoleBackbufferWidth = 2560
r_ConsoleBackbufferHeight = 1440

Notes

This will set the game to use the resolution you specified in the files you created and make the game start a little bit faster.

Widescreen resolution

2560x1440 (1440p) as well as many non-16:9 resolutions are not listed and will have to be set manually.
Instructions[4][5]
  1. Extract data and gamedata otherwise this will not work.
  2. Go to the installation folder.
  3. Create a new file called user.cfg and open it with your text editor of choice.
  4. At the top of the file add and change to your desired resolution:
r_Fullscreen=1
r_Width=800
r_Height=600

Notes

This method will allow you to manually select whichever resolution you desire.

Issues fixed

Game chooses wrong refresh rate

CryEngine 3 may set your monitor's refresh rate to 24 Hz; this results in stuttering and poor performance even if internal GPU render shows a high fps.[2]
Override refresh rate set by game[6]
  1. Download 3Dmigoto.
  2. Copy the files in the x32 folder to the installation folder.
  3. Open d3dx.ini.
  4. Change ;refresh_rate=60 to the desired value, and remove the semicolon (e.g. refresh_rate=144).
  5. Change hunting=1 to ;hunting=1 by adding a semicolon.
  6. Save the changes and close the file.

Flickering shadows above 1080p resolution

Shadows may flicker across the entire screen when running the game above 1080p resolution.
Switch the game to 1080p then back to 2160p
  1. In the graphics options, switch the game to 1920 x 1080 resolution.
  2. After the screen refresh, switch the game back to 3840 x 2160 resolution.
  3. The flickering shadows issue should now be resolved.
  4. Unfortunately, this solution can only be used for 2160p, not custom resolutions like 1440p that have to be enabled using the widescreen resolution fix.
Switch to Graphics - Min Spec, then back to High or Ultra Spec
  1. In the Graphic Settings, change to Graphics - Min Spec.
  2. After the screen refresh, switch back to desired High or Ultra Spec.
  3. The flickering shadows issue should now be resolved.
  4. If the flickering shadows are still present, may require repeating the above steps.
Disable SSAO
  1. Unpack the config.PAK file.
  2. Open the .cfg file for editing that corresponds to the Graphics Spec set in your Graphic Settings. Ex. highspec.cfg for High Spec, or veryhighspec.cfg for Ultra Spec.
  3. Set r_SSAO=0.
