An unofficial patch (1.4) exists for the game claimed to fix a Visual C++ error, remove the need of the CD, fix compatibility issues with Windows 8 and gamespy and much more. Recommended.

Open Notepad and paste the following text:

taskkill /F /IM explorer.exe EE2.exe Start explorer.exe

Now Save As [All Files] EE2.bat into your EE2 directory that contains EE2.exe. Right-drag that batch file onto your desktop and create a shortcut. You can right click on the shortcut and choose Properties to change the icon to the one in the EE2 directory (EE2.ico). You can do the same for the expansion (EE2x.exe) if you have it.

Then check the compatibility (right click on EE2.exe in game dir and choose properties, compatibility, check the box run in compatibility mode and choose Windows 7.
