Sega Mega Drive and Genesis Classics is a singleplayer and multiplayer game developed and published by Sega, while the 2016 Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Hub was developed by D3T using the Unity engine. It is a compilation of emulated Sega Mega Drive/Genesis games.

The original set of games, Sega Genesis Classics[Note 2], was first released for Windows in a series of five volumes that ran between June 1, 2010 through May 2, 2012 with total of over 50 titles from the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis library. The first four volumes were re-released for retail as Sega Genesis Classics: Gold Edition in 2011. It features optional smoothing and scanline filters, keyboard and controller remapping options, and quick saving. It is referred to as the "Simple Launcher" in the Steam version.

An updated version of this collection, Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Classics Hub, was released for Windows, MacOS, and Linux through Steam on April 28, 2016. It uses the Unity engine to provide a virtual room interface that, in addition to the features of the previous compilations, offers more graphical and emulation settings, save states, fast-forwarding and rewinding, different regional versions of certain games, online multiplayer for applicable games, leaderboards, and uncompressed ROMs that can be used with external emulators. It is referred to as the "Game Hub" in the Steam version. Exclusive to the Steam and PlayStation 4 version of this collection is the ability to use VR. As of April 28, 2016, the Steam version of this collection now features Steam Workshop support, allowing users to submit mods (i.e. ROM hacks) for each game.[3] Unfortunately, the Steam Workshop for this collection has became flooded with pirated ROMs (including games found in other compilations being sold through Steam or other platforms) and pornographic content disguised as mods due to lack of moderation of submitted content.[4] 100% Steam Achievement completion in this collection has also became impossible without Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles which were delisted on May 20, 2022 to be included in Sonic Origins.

The "Simple Launcher" has a problem with not saving settings when setting the fullscreen resolution higher than 1920x1080 on certain displays, causing settings to reset when attempting to play a game in 4K. It also does not allow players to disable the second player's controller regardless of using keyboard or controllers, which affects Alien Storm due to certain modes being locked out with the second virtual controller being plugged in. The "Game Hub" cannot save progress when using modded versions of the games.[5] Certain regional ROMs must be extracted by using QuickBMS. It is also possible to replace the stock ROMs stored inside the *.pak files used by Sega Mega Drive and Genesis Classics with modified ones or add new games for the "Simple Launcher" by using PscdPack.

Essential improvements

Run in other emulators

For the Steam version, uncompressed ROMs of the purchased games can be found under <path-to-game>\uncompressed ROMs.
Most regional ROMs are unavailable in the uncompressed ROMs folder; instead, they must be extracted from their respective g####.pak files found in the data folder through using QuickBMS or PscdPack.
Copy Steam ROMs to an external folder for use with other emulators[6]
  1. Copy the contents of <path-to-game>\uncompressed ROMs and paste them into another emulator's ROMs folder.
  2. Rename *.68K and *.SGD file extensions to *.bin or *.md so that other emulators will correctly recognize and run them.
  3. Workshop mods are *.bin files inside folders found in steamapps\workshop\content\34270.
  4. External emulators can load these Workshop mods. Copy the contents of 32470 to the chosen ROM folder, and rename the *.bin filenames with a descriptive name, and then load through the emulator.
Extract the ROMs from the *.pak files with QuickBMS (non-Steam versions)[7]
  1. Download QuickBMS.
  2. Download the Sega Classics script (further down the page).
  3. Run QuickBMS and choose the Sega Classics script.
  4. Choose the installation folder containing the *.pak files.
  5. Choose the folder to save extracted ROMs to.
  6. QuickBMS will now extract the ROMs. Press Enter when done to exit QuickBMS.
  7. The ROMs are now extracted and named appropriately, ready for use with external emulators (see Emulation:Sega Genesis for recommendations).
Extract the ROMs from the *.pak files with PscdPack[8]
  1. Download the latest release of PscdPack from Github.
  2. Run PscdPack.exe, then click New/Open, and select the desired ROM (e.g. g0000.pak).
  3. After loading the chosen *.pak file in PscdPack, click Extract ROM, then choose the folder where the extracted ROM will be saved into while giving it a descriptive name when prompted (e.g. g0000.bin to Altered Beast (USA).bin).
  4. Move the extracted ROM file to a convenient location on the computer, then load the extracted ROM with the emulator (see Emulation:Sega Genesis for recommendations).

Issues unresolved

Unable to disable Player 2 controller

The input settings should contain a checkbox to disable a controller, but the checkbox may not appear (shown here). The inability to disable the controller affects Alien Storm as the second controller must be disabled to access one of the game modes.

Issues fixed

Run the game at screen refresh rate

2011 Gold Edition forces 60Hz refresh rate even if the monitor supports higher than that.
Override refresh rate set by game[11]
  1. Download Chiri's resolution forcing tool.
  2. Extract d3d9.dll and d3dx.ini to the installation folder.
  3. Open d3dx.ini.
  4. Change refresh_rate=60 to desired hertz; e.g. refresh_rate=120.

Blank full-screen mode (Linux)

Playing games in full-screen mode in the Linux version of the SEGA Game Room does not work with AMD Mesa drivers.[12]
Run the Windows version with Proton

In the Compatibility tab of the game's Properties window in Steam, enable the "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" option and select Proton 6.3-8 or newer from the drop-down list.

Green splotches on human characters in Sword of Vermilion

The game was designed for older TV CRT monitors. On modern displays, human characters in the game appear to have green splotches on their skin.[13]
Workaround: RetroArch CRT Render filter
  1. Follow Run in other emulators instructions listed above, retrieving sov.smd for use with RetroArch.
  2. Load shader preset crt-royale-ntsc-320px-svideo.glsp

Notes:

  • This doesn't remove the green splotches, but rather blurs it to make it more like skin tone.
  • Experimenting with the graphics filter parameters can help with providing a less distracting appearance.

Game crashes on start

The game crashes on start. The game writes an error.log file showing the message "UnityPlayer.dll caused an Access Violation". This can be caused by a bug in the Unity framework conflicting with Citrix Workspace App. A workaround is available via uninstalling Citrix Workspace App and re-installing with some installation parameters that avoid this conflict.
Instructions[14]
  1. Uninstall Citrix Workspace App.
  2. If Citrix Workspace App is necessary, then reinstall Citrix Workspace App but install from a command prompt, using the below command line:

CitrixWorkspaceApp.exe ADDLOCAL=ReceiverInside,ICA_Client,AM,SELFSERVICE,DesktopViewer,Flash,Vd3d,WebHelper,BrowserEngine"

Run mods or adding new games in the Simple Launcher

This program allows users to extract ROMs from SEGA Genesis Classics *.pak files for use with external emulators.
ROMs in *.md, *.sgd, and *.68k format must be converted to *.bin due the save data format used by Sega Genesis Classics.
Use PscdPack to create custom[16]
  1. Download the latest release of PscdPack from Github.
  2. Run PscdPack.exe, then click New/Open and give the custom *.pak a name that uses the g####.pak naming convention that has not been already used by Sega Genesis Classics. See Games identification
  3. Click Replace ROM and select the modified ROM.
  4. Give the modified ROM a descriptive name under the ROM info section, then select the appropriate region of the ROM and the On-cartridge Memory Config if the game uses battery backup save data.
  5. Click save and the custom *.pak file, then move the file into <path-to-game>\data folder.
  6. Run the "simple" launcher (SEGAGenesisClassics.exe), the custom should be in the list of available games.

Games identification

Below is the result of running MAME ROM identification command ("-romident") on ROMs. The following list is partial.[17] Most are known good dumps. A few most likely are bad dumps.

Tested by using The Revenge of Shinobi Steam ROM (TheSuperShinobi_JUE.SGD) with RetroArch's Genesis Plus GX core and Sword of Vermillion's ROM (sov.smd) on Kega Fusion, both of which worked on the respective emulators as long as they support the right formats.

Attempting to select 3840x2160 from the Simple launcher's fullscreen resolution options and the emulator refuses to save settings. I've attempted to use aspect-ratio correction, disabled filter, windowed mode, and selected the Xbox One controller as the input device while fullscreen resolution is set to 3840x2160, but the Simple launcher always seem to reset settings every time if a 4K resolution is selected. Resolutions below 4K such as 2160x1440 however appear to work fine.)
