Regarding handling Valve's depreciating support for older OSes

7
Macgovern (talkcontribs)

After seeing your recent edits on Steam games' official system requirements, I would request you undo them and refrain from attempting to handle reflecting Valve's depreciation of older Windows OSes yourself. PCGamingWiki's staff has yet to decide on how to handle reflecting this change in game articles; therefore, the old rules for handling system requirements from Steam, which is to leave them as-is unless otherwise noted in the editing guide (i.e. changing "GeForce 1080" to "Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080").

If you would like to suggest a change, please join the official PCGamingWiki Discord and make your suggestion in its "development" channel. This way, any suggestions you have on handling this can be discussed with myself and the rest PCGamingWiki staff.

I haven't removed any OS requirements; I moved the now Windows 10 minimum requirement to the recommended spec sections.

Macgovern (talkcontribs)

I never said you removed any OS requirements, merely that you changed them. If the game devs don't have Windows 10 listed in the official recommended system requirements, it should remain in the minimum requirements, regardless of what version of Windows Valve itself supports.

Apologies then - is there a page with a notice on recent editing changes? There's nothing on the front page except a hyperlink to the Windows wiki page.

If there is no notice, may I ask the progress of the decision? Valve announced the sunsetting of Windows 7 and 8 support in March of last year with it going into effect in the beginning of the year.

The reason I mention that I haven't removed anything is because most recommended OS requirements are either blank or show the most recent OS as of when the game was published. I'm not sure what's incorrect by putting a Windows 10 OS requirement if it's already in the requirement section on the wiki.

An incomplete list of editing changes, among other changes to the site, can be seen here: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/PCGamingWiki:Changelog

As for why pages tend to have the latest OS in the recommended section, if not blank? For the former, if it's not part of the official requirements, it's due to people moving things around as they see fit or a depreciated editing style where there could only be one OS listed in the minimum requirements, with any others moved to the recommended requirements section. For the latter? Usually it's because either 1) that part of the official recommended requirements section is identical to the minimum system requirements, and is therefore omitted per PCGamingWiki rules, or 2) there are no official recommended system requirements.

Finally, while the PCGamingWiki staff are aware of Valve's depreciation, there hasn't been any real discussion on deciding what, if any, action should be taken. If you think action needs to be taken now, then I reiterate my suggestion to join the Discord server and discuss it in the server's "development" channel (which, again, is open to the public despite the name). I make that suggestion simply because most discussion regarding articles and the operation and rules of the wiki take place on the Discord server in both a public and private, staff-only manner; thus, that'd be the best place to voice such things.

There doesn't seem to be a changelog/notice to not edit the OS requirements due to Valve dropping Windows 7/8 support. I asked because I wouldn't have known not to change the OS without your message and edit reversals.

I don't seem to understand not being able to edit "a depreciated editing style where there could only be one OS listed in the minimum requirements, with any others moved to the recommended requirements section." Wouldn't I want to edit a depreciated format to the newest, more recent format?

For the second point of the case of there being no official recommended system requirements, am I allowed to change it to Windows 10 if it was Windows 10 before the sunsetting of Windows 7/8?

And apologies, I don't have a Discord, so I'm unable to suggest my opinion.

Then I'm glad I was able to enlighten you!

As for your two questions:

First, obviously you can and should change a depreciated editing style to the latest one. I apologize for not making that clear.

Second, if it's not there in the official system requirements, it shouldn't be there unless stated otherwise by the editing guide, even if it means the developer's decision not to causes, on PCGamingWiki's end, the recommended requirement section to be empty, either in the OS section, or, if there no official recommended system requirements, the entire recommended requirements section.
