Key points

Owning any version, including retail, entitles you to a DRM-free copy on GOG.com; see Witcher Backup.
Game has extremely poor mouse input. There is severe negative acceleration, and sensitivity is tied to frame rate (meaning that if the frame rate is fluctuating, then so will the sensitivity of the mouse).[citation needed]

Essential improvements[edit]

Patches[edit]

There are two patches available for download on the official page:

  • Patch 1.4 will upgrade the Original Edition of the game to the Enhanced Edition.
  • Patch 1.5 will remove the DRM and correct bugs introduced by 1.4. It also contains five community-made adventures.

Walking in OTS view[edit]

Walking in OTS view[citation needed]

There is originally no way to walk (as opposed to run) in the OTS (over the shoulder) camera view. A small mod addressing this is available here. The archive it comes in contains installation instructions.

Issues fixed[edit]

"Fixes to Common Problems" - A comprehensive list of known issues and potential fixes

Crash at launch[edit]

Steam Beta clients after May 29 seem to cause the game to crash.
Opt out from Steam Beta client[citation needed]
  1. Open Steam settings and select "Account" tab
  2. In "Beta participation" click "Change..." and select "NONE"
  3. Steam should ask you to restart and start to download stable version of the client
Refer to "Fixes to Common Problems" for other solutions.

Minimum System Requirements Not Met[edit]

Disable System Requirements Check[4]
This fix is know to cause other issues. You might be unable to change the game's resolution above a certain limit, and the texture quality and antialiasing settings might be locked to "Low." To avoid this try the optional step or the registry edit solution below this one.
  1. Create a shortcut to witcher.exe (the game itself, NOT the game's launcher).
  2. Right-click the shortcut and choose Properties.
  3. Add -dontforceminreqs to the end of the Target.
  4. (Optional) Download TexSettings.d2a and move the file to <path-to-game>\Data\Override. If the Override folder does not exist then create the folder first and then move the file to that folder.
Disable DirectDraw Emulation Mode[5]
This fix is best applied by an experienced user. Incorrect registry edits can seriously disable your PC! Proceed at your own risk.
  1. Open up regedit (type the name into the Start Menu's search bar and press Enter)
  2. Export a backup of your registry, just in case.
  3. Nagivate to the following location:
  4. You should see the key EmulationOnly set to 1. Double click the key and change its value to 0.
  5. Close the registry editor, reboot your computer, and retry the game.
  6. When you do not plan on playing the game for a while, edit the registry entry back to 1 as it may interfere with games using DirectDraw heavily, such as older 2D games.

No mouse in main menu[edit]

Press Shift[citation needed]

Sometimes, if you skip the intro cinematic, the mouse is gone on the main menu. This can be fixed by pressing the key that releases the mouse in OTS view(shift by default)

Frequent game crashes[edit]

Set the game to run in windowed mode[citation needed]

If the game is frequently crashing back to the desktop, running in windowed mode should solve this. A program such as Borderless Gaming will enable you to still run the game in full screen while in this mode.

Rendered cut-scenes don't display[edit]

On some systems rendered cut-scenes don't display correctly. Audio will still play, but what was on the screen previously will be displayed.
Change lighting setting[citation needed]
  1. Go to Advanced Settings.
  2. Set Lighting to low. Cut-scenes will now display correctly.
You can change the lighting setting back afterwards but it will need to be repeated for the next cut-scene.

In-game cut-scenes appear pixelated[edit]

Use any 16:9 resolution[citation needed]
  1. Go to Options, Video Options.
  2. Choose one of available 16:9 resolutions (1280x720, 1920x1080, 2560x1440, etc.)

Lights visible through walls[edit]

On some systems with SLI enabled, light sources are sometimes visible through walls.
Change SLI rendering mode[citation needed]
  1. In the nVidia control panel go to "Manage 3D settings."
  2. Hit the tab "Program settings" and add <path-to-game>\system\witcher.exe
  3. Scroll down through the settings to the one called "Multi-GPU rendering mode" and change it to Force Alternate frame rendering 2.
  4. Click Apply.
