Issues and Fixes

At Least 8 MB of Video Memory is Required

Upon launch, a window appears stating that "At least 8 mb of video memory is required", and the game fails to launch. This issue can be resolved by installing the Pure Faction fan patch.[7]

Unable to Initialize DirectX 8.0

This message is most often resolved by simply installing Pure Faction. However, if the message persists, the user should ensure the Pure Faction launcher is set to "Windowed" or "Stretched Windowed" mode.[8]

Stuttering/Glitching/Crashing

These issues are often resolved by installing Pure Faction.

Sub Explodes When it Hits Water

Some players encounter a bug when playing through the campaign which causes the submarine to explode upon contact with the sub bay water. This can be resolved by doing the following:[9]

  1. Install Pure Faction.
  2. At the sub bay part of the campaign, type r_maxfps 30 into the console (press ` to enter console): and press enter. Then press the button to drop the submarine into the water. Once the submarine is fully submerged, type r_maxfps 150 into the console and press enter.

If you encounter a bug while playing through the Red Faction single player campaign which causes the submarine vehicle to explode upon contact with the sub bay water, follow these steps to be able to use the submarine.
