Key points

Almost all known bugs, and issues resulting from incompatibility with newer versions of Windows can be resolved by installing the Pure Faction patch.

Pure Faction

Pure Faction is a fan-made patch currently in its third version designed to improve the game's playability on modern operating systems.
Fixes to almost all known Red Faction issues.
The ability to display the game in any resolution (including widescreen) with a fully functional HUD.
Mouse lag reduction.
Weapon and security bug-fixes.
General improvements and optimizations for modern versions of Windows.
Instructions
Launching through Steam, with overlay, using Pure Faction: You will have to update to the latest beta version of Pure Faction if you want to use the overlay and track your game time. After updating, go to the installation folder (mentioned above) and rename RedFaction.exe to RedFaction_org.exe, and PFLauncher.exe to RedFaction.exe. Launch the game through Steam, check your settings in the launcher and start the game.[1]
