Recoil is a singleplayer and multiplayer action vehicle combat shooter game developed by Zipper Interactive, produced by Westwood Studios and published by Electronic Arts.

The game was first released for Windows on March 18, 1999. It was released in France as Tank Blaster.

An OEM version was bundled with the Diamond Monster sound card, which does not support multiplayer.

Essential improvements

nGlide wrapper

The game is compatible with the nGlide wrapper which means it can be easier to play on modern systems.
You can use nGlide configuration to set the resolution you want to upscale the game. Set Aspect ratio to "Aspect correction" to avoid stretching.
Instructions[citation needed]
  1. Download and install nGlide.
  2. Go to <path-to-game>.
  3. Delete or rename GLIDE2X.dll.
  4. Run Rec3dfx.exe.
  5. In Options, set renderer to Accelerator - VooDoo (3dfx).
  6. Start the game.

Issues fixed

Failed to initialize video device

Use dgVoodoo2 (D3D Mode).[4]
Use DDrawCompat (D3D Mode).[5]
Use nGlide (3DFX Mode).[6]

Game engine runs too fast

Enable 60 FPS cap[7]
Set refresh rate on 60 Hz.[8]

Game starts lagging

It's caused by long Windows uptime, most notably on Windows 8/10+, due to the Fast Startup feature.
Uptime Faker[9]
  1. Download Ultimate ASI Loader (not x64 version).
  2. Copy dinput8.dll to <path-to-game> and rename it to dsound.dll.
  3. Download UptimeFaker32.
  4. Copy both files to <path-to-game>.
  5. Rename UptimeFaker32.dll to UptimeFaker32.asi.
  6. Open UptimeFaker.ini and change values as noted, then save the file.

Music does not play or loop

Fix CD audio not looping on Windows Vista and newer operating systems[10]
  1. Rip your game CD-ROM's music to MP3 format and place it in a folder on your computer.
  2. Download patched _inmm.dll, and install it.
  3. Patch Recoil.dat and Recoil3Dfx.dat, or Recoil.exe and Recoil3Dfx.exe depending on game version in <path-to-game> by dragging them onto _inmmconf.exe.
  4. Open _inmmconf.exe and set DirectShow player for default file type in the method tab, as well as the MP3 type.
  5. In the _inmm.ini tab, add the audio files you have ripped. Make sure the order is correct, and then save it in <path-to-game>.

Game is uncapped in software mode

Software mode comes with no FPS limit or Vsync, which makes the game run too fast.
Run the game with DxWnd[11]
  1. Go to Options in Menu bar of DxWnd and enable Expert mode.
  2. Configure the game to be run with DxWnd.
  3. In the configuration, set DirectX(2)/Vsync to ON and Hook/Injection to Inject DLL.
  4. Enabling the Timing/Clear UpTime flag will resolve the issue with variable change in speed.
  5. Launch the game from the entry in the DxWnd application to ensure proper hook of vertical synchronization.

Notes

  1. SafeDisc retail DRM does not work on Windows 10[2] or Windows 11 and is disabled by default on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 when the KB3086255 update is installed.[3]
  2. When running this game without elevated privileges (Run as administrator option), write operations against a location below %PROGRAMFILES%, %PROGRAMDATA%, or %WINDIR% might be redirected to %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore on Windows Vista and later (more details).
