Learning resources on the PCGW outside Discord

Hey there,

I saw your last edit on the Valheim page regarding the surround sound patch and modified it to better align with the documentation of the Audio template. Since you appear to be new and voiced your frustration about not being able to get help from the Discord guild, I thought you might appreciate the in-wiki editing guide, which explains the guidelines of most parts of a PCGW article. At least that's how I got started, though I have to admit I have prior experience with MediaWiki. There's also a Steam group, which might be a decent alternative if Discord doesn't work for you.

Also, while I certainly don't know everything to know about how things work here, feel free to hit me up if you have any questions. You can check my profile for contact details, or make use of my talk page instead. I can't guarantee any quick response times, though.

Hey Mezzodrinker,

thank you - I assumed how I did it wasn't quite right but studying the wiki's help resources wasn't enough help[1] (thou I may have skipped the reference part because I mistook it "for" citation...).

And personally I find the way references are used here often a bit redundant. For proper scientific citations with book page number and so on - great. But when it boils down to practically nothing more than an additional step instead of a direct link - hmm meh? IMO the link to Unity's scripting API falls in that category.

Re "Discord guild": Thank you for not conforming to Discord's BS in calling their s*** "servers". As you might have guessed I have quite strong opinions on that which is probably why I couldn't get into PCGW's Discord guild at first (trying to use Discord with at least some anonymity is a pain).

Re "Steam group": I would've used that if I had know about it but it's not listed under About#Contact. Neither is /r/PCGamingWiki/

Re "help offer": Thanks again but I only created this account to add the surround sound hack/patch to VH's page. The last time I visited the pcgamingwiki was in 2020 (according to my browsers history).

Oh, and I only verified it with a 5.1 speaker setup. Lower configuration values (4 & 5) don't seem to make a difference but configured for 8 and VH/unity automatically falls back to 2. Nilbadimo (talk) 17:15, 25 November 2023 (UTC)

Ahem... 5 months later... As I said: No quick response times πŸ˜‚

I assumed how I did it wasn't quite right but studying the wiki's help resources wasn't enough help[1] (thou I may have skipped the reference part because I mistook it "for" citation...).

In that case, the reason I know this is probably my prior experience with MediaWiki. No worries.

[When a reference] boils down to practically nothing more than an additional step instead of a direct link - hmm meh? IMO the link to Unity's scripting API falls in that category.

I suppose that's debatable. I primarily changed it to keep the column contents nice and concise.

As you might have guessed I have quite strong opinions on that which is probably why I couldn't get into PCGW's Discord guild at first (trying to use Discord with at least some anonymity is a pain).

Probably because it's the same for me; I don't use Discord at all πŸ˜‰

Re "Steam group": I would've used that if I had know about it but it's not listed under About#Contact. Neither is /r/PCGamingWiki/

It actually took me a while to remember where I found that, but it's literally just the Steam icon in the page footer πŸ˜… Though I do agree that looking for things like this in the contact page is the first thing any sensible person would do, so it might be a good idea to mention that there, too.

Have a good one!
