Best version

An updated version of the game, entitled Thief Gold, is available from Steam and GOG.com. The game contains a number of enhancements that allow it to work on modern operating systems, including a number of digital-exclusive extras and improved compatibility for the Dark Engine with modern operating systems.

Improvements

Enhancement Pack

The Enhancement Pack will replace low quality objects and textures with versions that have higher polygon counts and texture resolutions.

This mod is compatible with the original Thief: The Dark Project and its expanded version, Thief Gold, as well as the sequel, Thief II: The Metal Age.

Video settings

Field of view (FOV)

Install TFix and set the resolution you want in-game. If your FOV is not detected correctly edit cam_ext.cfg in the install folder and change ;fov 90 to fov ##, replacing ## with the FOV you want. Save your changes and relaunch the game.

Windowed

Install TFix, then edit cam_ext.cfg in the install folder and change ;force_windowed to force_windowed. Save your changes and set your chosen resolution in-game.

Borderless fullscreen windowed

Install TFix, then edit cam_ext.cfg in the install folder and change ;force_windowed to force_windowed. Save your changes and set the resolution in-game to the same as your desktop resolution.

Vertical sync (Vsync)

Install TFix. This enables Vsync. To use TFix without Vsync, edit cam_ext.cfg in the install folder and change ;vsync_mode 0 to ;vsync_mode 0

Disc version incompatibility

Owners of the original disc version of the game may encounter problems when attempting to install the game on modern operating systems.[1] A simple way to fix this involves first locating Setup.exe in the files located on the disc. Right-click on this executable and select Properties, before setting compatibility mode to Windows 95 or 98.
