Crashes known

"There are too much handlers"

When playing the campagin following "liberation", a error window appear (titled "FMManager Error") with the message "There are too much handlers: 1237240".

Workaround : cheat code (press Enter) "walkover".[5]

Note: It occurs also with the latest latest patch and even with 8 GB RAM.

"Video memory ... AGP 256 ..."

The full content of the error windows that appear when launching the game:
« Engine.exe detected, that video memory is not configured properly. Please restart computer and set AGP Aperture size = 256 MB or more in BIOS configuration program. Usually you can enter BIOS configuration utility by pressing `DEL' while computer restart. »

There was a patch.[6] Note: as of 2018 it seems not downloadable anymore from this website, but it is downloadable from another.[7]

Tricks

Change mouse click sound

From a file manager, open the folder: "Program Files/GSC Game World/Cossacks II/Data/Sound/interface"

Rename the file interf_click1.wav to select1.waw (less noisy). You must provide a sound file for "select1.wav" otherwise the game will not start.

Skip intro videos

From a file manager, open the folder: "Program Files/GSC Game World/Cossacks II/Data/"

Rename the following file names (you may add "_off" for example):

  • 1.bik (it is the CDV video)
  • 2.bik (it is the GSC video)
  • 3.bik (it is the game intro video)

1280x1024 screen

The game start (v1.2) but set a wrong refresh rate (not 60 HZ).

Fix: unknown. If the OS is Linux then you may run 'winecfg' to force the display to a 'Emulate a Virtual desktop' (example 1024x768).

Notes

  1. This version of StarForce DRM does not work on Windows Vista or later.[1][2][3][4] For supported versions of Windows the StarForce driver may need to be updated manually using SFUPDATE.
  2. 2.0 2.1 Notes regarding Steam Play (Linux) data:
  3. When running this game without elevated privileges (Run as administrator option), write operations against a location below %PROGRAMFILES%, %PROGRAMDATA%, or %WINDIR% might be redirected to %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore on Windows Vista and later (more details).
