Version differences
- Railroad Tycoon II: Gold Edition includes the base game, its expansion, 15 additional official scenarios, and exclusive HMTL-based strategy guides for all included scenarios and campaigns.
- Railroad Tycoon II: Platinum includes the Gold Edition's non-exclusive content as well as 50 additional levels, the official strategy guide for the base game in PDF format, and 2 hours of additional music.
- Railroad Tycoon II: Platinum is Windows-only, whereas all previous versions of the game were also released separately for Mac OS and Linux.

The numerous versions of the unofficial 1.57 patch for the game, which corrects bugs in supply & demand for Railroad Tycoon II Platinum, Railroad Tycoon II Platinum GOG, and Railroad Tycoon II Gold, can be found here. Logging in with an account is required for download. Note: The GOG version of the patch is also compatible with Steam.
- Game renders via OpenGL and can now easily minimize on new OS.
- When using this patch with the GOG version, make sure that all of RT2_PLAT.EXE's compatibility mode settings (under Properties/Compatibility) are set to off, or the game will be stuck on a black screen at launch.
