Issues and Fixes
- Frictional Games has put together a troubleshooting guide for Amnesia: The Dark Descent
It seems as if sometimes the game doesn´t install completely; there are still files which are missing, corrupted or somehow removed after the installation.
What should help: Steam: Right-click the game in your steam library, choose "properties". Go to "local files" and click "verify integrity of game cache"; steam should now check if the game is complete and will download and install the missing files.
if this doesn´t work, also try:
- right-click the game in your steam library, choose "properties",uncheck "Enable steam community ingame"
- right-click the game in your steam library, choose "properties", go to "updates", change to "don´t update"
- go to
%USERPROFILE%\My Documents\Amnesia
and delete theMain
folder. This folder is going to be recreated when you start Amnesia the next time
Adjusting in game gamma does nothing
One possible problem here is that you're using something else which is taking control of gamma options, probably fl.ux. Turn it off and the game should let you adjust gamma properly again.
Graphical Tweaks
POM and Shadow Distorting
To enable Parallax Occlusion Mapping and Shadow Distorting with eye-vector clamping do the following:
- Replace the default "deferred_gbuffer_solid_frag.glsl" with this one in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Amnesia - The Dark Descent\redist\core\shaders\
- Change ParallaxQuality="1" and GBufferType="1" in
%USERPROFILE%\My Documents\Amnesia\Main\main_settings.cfg
Graphical Bugs
Walking on the Ceiling
Sometime (usually starting a few 'levels' in) the game will flip around, your hand and the lantern will remain as if you are normally holding it but the entire game seems as if you are walking upside down on the ceiling.
This bug is caused by outdated graphics cards and updating your drivers will usually fix this. Or go to Amnesia's main menu, then options, select graphics, then advanced and turn 'INSANITY' option off.
Lamp lights through walls
Depending on your hardware configuration, you may be able to see the glow of every wall lamp in the level through walls. This bug has appeared in computers that have enabled both Intel HD integrated graphics and a separate AMD or Nvidia card. Either disable Switchable graphics in the BIOS or tell the graphics software to use the High Performance card, and the problem should disappear.
System requirements
- Drivers should be from NVIDIA/ATI to ensure proper functionality.
- Caution when using an older or low cost CPU, such as Intel Celeron or AMD Sempron, their performance might not match this requirement.
- Graphic cards that do not support OpenGL 3.0 will not be able to run the game at all. Laptops that contain integrated graphics cards generally do not support OpenGL 3.0.
