Steam |
- Requires a Standing Stone Games account.
- Retail copies might come with Pando Media Booster, a third-party BitTorrent-based client that was used up until 2013 to speed up the patching process of the game. Due to security concerns, Pando Media Booster should be uninstalled if it is present on the system.[1][2]
Monetization
Type | Notes |
---|---|
DLC | Portions of the game's quests and classes can be bought in à la carte fashion via quest packs and purchased classes. |
Expansion pack | The game receives regular paid expansions with new story content and occasionally new game mechanics. |
Free-to-play | The base game and first 5 expansions (up to level 95 out of 140) are entirely free. This is likely to constitute at least 200+ hours of free content for new players (and potentially a lot more if you're a completionist).[3][4] |
Subscription | Optional monthly subscription which unlocks large portions (but not all) of content which free to play players can buy directly. |
Microtransactions
Type | Notes |
---|---|
Boost | Game features various purchasable boosts for experience and other comparable mechanics. |
Cosmetic | Cosmetic sets or individual cosmetic items can be directly purchased or won from lootboxes. |
Currency | LOTRO Points are purchasable directly via real money transactions. |
Free-to-grind | Majority of microtransactions can be obtained by grinding activities which offer limited premium currencies. |
Infinite spend | Many microtransactions are infinitely purchasable (but not all). |
Loot box | Free and paid lootboxes exist. |
Time-limited | Time-limited promotions are often featured. |
Unlock | Quest packs and classes can be unlocked using currencies purchased for real money. |
