After posting this, I remembered I actually own the DRM-free version from the Humble Indie Bundle 4. Here is my testing:

  1. I created a fresh profile in the Steam version on Windows 7.
  2. I copied this to the DRM-free version on Windows. It worked.
  3. I fired up a VM of Ubuntu 12.04.
  4. I copied the same profile to Linux. The Steam and DRM-free versions share the same save location on Linux.
  5. It worked with the DRM-free version on Linux, but not with the Steam version which claimed the save was corrupt.

I don't have a Mac to test this with, but I'll assume it is similar to the Linux situation. It seems the note on the wiki is accurate, but worded poorly. I will clarify it.
