TERA has been renamed TERA: Rising and is now a free to play title.

Editing INI Files And Terms Of Service

The terms of service forbids the modification of the ini files (amongst other things) and can result in the suspension of one's game account.[1] However, a community manager has stated that "for the sake of clarification, you won't get banned for changing a line in a .ini file".[2]

However, any discussion on the official forums or on other community sites, such as MMORPG.com forums about editing .ini files, will result in a warning and the post being deleted.

Digital Rights Management (DRM)

The game launches from a launcher client which requires a constant internet access to use, as is typical of MMOs. There is no activation limit however signing in from a new location will require you to provide a security code sent to your e-mail account.

Issues And Fixes

Launcher gets stuck on "Applying Patch"

This issue is usually solved by doing the following:

  1. Delete the file "gl.version", or "gl_v2.version".
  2. Start "TERA-Launcher.exe".
  3. Now the launcher updates itself.
  4. After patching, you are able to use the play button.

Unable to Login to Launcher

There are several reasons this issue may occur, and it is usually characterised by the login page on the launcher constantly refreshing.

  1. Ensure you have javascript enabled, as this will affect your login on the launcher and on the website.
  2. Several anti-virus programs appear to interfere with the TERA login; and as of yet this has not been fixed. Try disabling or reducing the stringency of your anti-virus before logging in, or (if you anti-virus software supports it) try setting the TERA launcher executable as an exception within the software.
  3. If you have modified your Windows host file then this may be the cause. It is possible to reset the host file, but ensure you back up your OS and essential files before attempting it as doing so incorrectly can cause irreparable damage to your files.

Graphical Tweaks

Field Of Vision

It is possible to edit a .ini file to alter the in-game FOV. To do this, go to ...\Program Files (x86)\TERA\Client\S1Game\Config and open the file S1Input.ini with a text editor such as Notepad. Then navigate to the following line:

bEnableMouseSmoothing=true

Underneath this line, add a new line with the following:

Bindings=(Name="x",Command="fov N")

Where 'N' is the desired FOV value - note that 100 is a reasonable value to set this to. Also note that there should be no semi-colon at the beginning of this line unlike the lines which follow it. A visual representation of the change in FOV value can be seen here.

Note that the game natively supports UI rescaling, so for different resolutions/FOVs you can adjust the size of the UI via the 'UI Setting' tab in the in-game options menu.

Framerate Unlock

By editing S1Engine.ini it is also possible to unlock the games framerate. Go to ...\Program Files (x86)\TERA\Client\S1Game\Config and open this file before navigating to the line:

bSmoothFrameRate=TRUE

Change this line to the following:

bSmoothFrameRate=FALSE

Improvements

Disable Opening Cinematics

Find your installation directory, this is usually C:\Program Files\TERA or C:\Program Files (x86)\TERA
Navigate to the following: \Client\S1Game\CookedPC\Art_Data\Packages\Video
Rename these 4 files (ex. intro_atari.bik=>intro_atari_old.bik):

  • intro_atari.bik
  • intro_bhs.bik
  • intro_eme.bik
  • intro_fog.bik (EU Version)
  • intro_ubi.bik (EU Version)
  • Prologue_kor.bik

Borderless Fullscreen Windowed

The game natively supports borderless fullscreen windowed mode, accessible via the in-game options menu under 'Video'.

Rebinding Keys

The game allows you to rebind the entire keyboard layout via the in-game options menu under 'Shortcuts'.

Controller Support

The game supports Xbox 360 Controllers by default, and it can be reconfigured by typing the following in the chat:

/controller

This will bring up a controller configuration menu where all buttons are fully rebindable.

Inverting the y-axis in the controller can be toggled by inverting the mouse camera options.

http://megrae-gaming.blogspot.ch/ is at the time of writing (07 februari 2013) not yet updated for the "Tera Rising" patch.

http://gamevixenzone.ryonani.com/hot-stuff-21/tera-mods-45/ currently has up-to-date files (09 February 2013) for "De-censor" files and various voices from the Japanese and Korean versions of the game.

Both sites above, if updated, should provide the exact same files.
