Key points

Original Windows versions work well on modern systems (see Installing on 64-bit versions of Windows).
Original Windows versions run windowed and can be resized/maximised to make full use of any modern resolution.
The GOG.com release is the DOS version in DOSBox so has a fixed resolution and many limitations.
The Network Edition needs a fix to work on modern systems (see Network Edition Interoperability Patch).

Availability

The best version of SimCity 2000 is the Special Edition. It include the game, extra scenarios, a collection of fan made cities, the SimCity Urban Renewal Kit and a collection of building sets, an intro movie and interviews with Will Wright. The Special Edition was originally released for DOS and Windows 95.

The Windows 95 version has a couple of added features. It takes advantage of the features offered by Windows, such as running the game window on the same resolution as the desktop, a status bar at the bottom of the game window, and an extra zoom level.

A Network Edition also exists for Windows 95, which changes the game slightly in that you have to buy land, and the interface is revamped.
