Video settings

In-game video settings. Video quality can be set to either Medium or High, the latter resulting in slightly better textures and shadows.

Widescreen resolution

Set custom resolution^{[citation needed]}

Go to <path-to-game>\Engine\.
Open vars_pc.cfg.
Change ScreenResHeight= and ScreenResWidth= to the desired resolution.

Notes

Resolutions above 1920x1080 may cause the map and examined inventory items to not display properly.

Windowed

Force windowed^[2]

Download and run DxWnd.
Click on Edit and Add.
Set the path to <path-to-game>\Bin\SilentHill.exe.
Set the desired window position and size.
Set Desktop for borderless fullscreen windowed.
Click on the Input tab.
Set Cursor visibility to Hide.
Set Cursor Clipper to On.
Click OK, then File and Save.

Notes

The game may become temporarily unresponsive during the intro videos.

Film grain

Remove film grain^[3]
Download and run SHHPatcher. Select the Remove Film Grain option.

Set screen refresh rate^[4]
Install Special K by following the Unofficial Special K Guide. Start the game once and close it to allow the configuration file of Special K to be created. Open `<path-to-game>\Bin\d3d9.ini` or `%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Mods\SpecialK\Profiles\SilentHill.exe\SpecialK.ini` depending on the installation method you used. Change `RefreshRate=-1` to `RefreshRate=0` under `[Render.FrameRate]`.

Camera won't stop rotating when using controller

Restart your PC or log out/in^{[citation needed]}

Open binds_pc_mjs.cfg.

Some sounds only come out of the right speaker

Go into audio manager. Change speaker settings to surround sound 5.1.
