Key points
- Sierra's first graphic adventure developed for AGI engine.
- Produced originally for IBM and intended to promote capabilities and features of IBM's then-new PCjr computer
- The earliest releases of the original AGI version were so-called "booters" and played directly from floppies. The 1987 re-release uses an updated version of AGI engine and adds support for EGA and Hercules display modes. The 1987 version is the most commonly available release of the original AGI version
- The game received an official remake in 1990, which was developed using the SCI engine. This remake uses the basic design and puzzles from the original game while featuring remade graphics, new soundtrack, more detailed environments and expanded text and dialogue. Tierra's/AGD's unofficial remake is based on 1990 version
- The game was originally known simply as King's Quest. The 1987 re-release added Quest for the Crown sub-title to the packaging while using the original name in the game. The 1990 EGA remake is titled King's Quest 1: Quest for the Crown in the game and Roberta Williams' King's Quest 1: Quest for the Crown in the box.
- The official PC releases of the AGI version require the audio hardware of PCjr or Tandy computer for full audio channels with PC Speaker and single channel being the only option for non-PCjr/non-Tandy systems. This issue can be fixed by using third-party AGI interpreter such as ScummVM or NAGI. Alternative solution is to configure DOSBox to emulate PCjr or Tandy system, which causes the game to detect and use the emulated PCjr/Tandy hardware for sound
