Late to the party, I know, but the game went on sale on Steam and I'd always wanted to play as a kid. Whenever I take damage, the entire screen, save for the HUD, becomes a mess of vertical lines. I couldn't find a fix for this online, so any help is appreciated.

You'll need to provide more details such as your system specs, a screenshot of the issue and which version of the game (which PC store) you are playing with. Also worth posting to Steam discussions if it's a Steam version.
Yeah, GOG might be free of the issue. Plus, if you have Origin version, there's an Origin to GOG patch on the game's wiki page. Also, maybe it won't harm to try out dgVoodoo or DXVK. See our Wiki pages for them for further instructions.
