Assassin's Creed (and Assassin's Creed II) have problems with button mapping and recognition. Use x360ce.

Game always starts up in Windowed Mode

By default, the game should run in fullscreen mode. However, occasionally, the game forces itself into windowed mode, and, as there is no fullscreen mode available in the options section. You can use software such as Game Companion to force the game into a borderless window. However, to run the game (or any game, rather) in true fullscreen mode instead of windowed mode, press Alt+↵ Enter. You can also use the -fullscreen command line argument.

Conflict with Nvidia GeForce 306.23 drivers

A conflict with the 306.23 NVIDIA drivers causes a crash-to-desktop when the game transitions from the introduction videos to the main menu.
