Issues fixed

Install the game on modern operating systems

The installer is incompatible with newer versions of Windows, and fails with a "start menu error" message, requiring manual action to bypass.
Perform a "manual" install of the game[1]
  1. Insert the disc in the drive.
  2. Create a new folder at the desired install location, e.g. C:\WARGODS.
  3. Open File Explorer and browse the disc by right-clicking on it and selecting Open or Browse.
  4. Copy the MIDI folder over to the newly created folder.
  5. Open the DATA folder and copy HI.EXE, HI.DAT, and WARGODS.HLP over to the newly created folder (so they reside in the root of the folder, and not in a subfolder).
  6. Navigate to the newly created folder and rename the two HI files to WARGODS, so they end up named WARGODS.EXE and WARGODS.DAT.
  7. If everything was done correctly the newly created folder should now include a subfolder called MIDI and three files called WARGODS (an executable, an DAT file, and a help file).
  8. Next, launch the Registry Editor (regedit) of Windows.
  9. Create the necessary registry keys for the Configuration file(s) location.
  10. Open the Configuration file(s) location and create a new String Value and call it Path and set its value to the install folder of the game, e.g. C:\WARGODS.
  11. The game should now be detected as installed.

Notes

There is technically no difference between the HI.EXE and LO.EXE executables.
HI.DAT includes the high sound quality files. LO.DAT includes the normal sound quality files.
The executable loads the WARGAMES.DAT in the folder specified in the Path registry value, so it is important that it points to the right folder.

Game does not detect the game CD as inserted

Ensure the CD drive is mounted as D:\ in Windows[2][citation needed]
