Download the config files and extract them.
Place them in %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\The Vanishing of Ethan Carter\.

Notes

Do not click Restore to Defaults in the game's launcher as it may remove configuration files.

Nothing happens after clicking Play / 0xc000007b error[edit]

Reinstall d3dx9_43.dll^[4]

Remove d3dx9_43.dll from both %WINDIR%\System32 and %WINDIR%\SysWOW64.
Download DirectX End-User Runtime and install it.
