Issues fixed

Key binding screen is unresponsive

The keybinding screen may be unresponsive at lower frame rates (~40-50 fps or lower).
Decrease graphical settings to increase frame rate

Temporarily lowering graphical settings to bring frame rate up should solve the issue.

Low performance (Linux/Proton)

The game uses a version of the Unity Engine which has a critical bug if run via Proton resulting in low performance on some system configurations.
Limit CPU cores available to the game[5]

Add as a Launch option taskset -c 0,1,2,3 nice %command% if you CPU has more than 4 cores/threads.

Low performance (Windows)

This game uses a version of the Unity Engine which can perform poorly on hardware with more than 4 CPU cores.
Limit CPU cores available to the game

After launching the game, use alt-tab to return to the desktop. Open the task manager, then click the details tab and find "TheForest.exe". Right-click on this entry, and then click "set affinity". In this dialog, uncheck the "All Processors" box, and then check the first 4 even-numbered CPUs: e.g. 0, 2, 4, 6. Click OK, and return to the game. Performance can improve dramatically after applying these changes.
