Fix for the game crashing on startup if you have more than ~8 cores

I just started using this new computer because my old one nearly fried, and when I tried booting up DOWII everything looked great until GFWL started up. The opening cutscene instantly lost audio, and the game doesn't produce a squeak. I also noticed a lot of the colors lost much of their vibrancy, like the pallete had been greyed out slightly. Tried fiddling with all the settings, googled some support options, and nothing has worked thus far.

Does anyone have a straight forward fix I can use? I'm not very computer savvy, so anything that's too complicated won't be much use unless you wanna skype me or something.

New specs: Windows 7 Home 64-bit Intel i7-2600 3.4GHz 10GB RAM NVIDIA 550-Ti Not sure on the M/B

It sounds like you have two different issues here:

  1. The sound issue is most likely a conflict with your audio drivers. Try right-clicking the volume icon in the bottom right of your screen and pressing playback devices. Under this list should be your speaker setup e.g. I use my screen's internal speakers so my setup is listed under Realtek High Definition Audio. Google the audio drivers for your sound card basically and try downloading & installing the latest drivers. This may fix it.
  2. The graphics option could be one of two things - either your new monitor has a different brightness/contrast set up than the one on your old computer or the game has different in-game settings for this. Changing either one will work - use the buttons on your monitor to adjust contrast and this will add vibrancy to the colour of the game; I believe the game also has an in-game option to do this too.

Hope some of that helps :)
