Bad freezing in the dwarf fortress

1

I've gotten down to the dwarf fortress level and keep getting an issue where the screen will completely freeze for several seconds, play for a fraction of a second and then freeze again with the whole process repeating. I can't tell for sure if it's the same problem reported here, but it sounds similar. Will try the solutions they suggested and report back if it works.

EDIT: So now I've got another problem that I had thought was the same one (and it still might be, it's hard to tell). This one doesn't come back from the freeze on it's own, but stays frozen for as long as I cared to observe it (about 30 seconds). Alt-tabbing out and then back in seems to fix it for a moment before it comes back. It is also characterized by some textures failing to load when you tab back in, and sometimes particle or effect vertices are drawn in the wrong place for a moment. After alt-tabbing several times, trying to get back to the main menu (which seems to fix nearly all the problems I've seen with Torchlight) it crashed. Forgot to mention: during the freeze CPU usage on one core goes up to 100%.

The fixes given in the forum post about checking for fragmentation, or decompressing the Pak.zip file did not help.

EDIT 2: Disregard. The issue was with my GPU. Apparently the Intel 3000 HD GPU built in to the Core i7 can crap out on some games.
