Running the game on Windows 11 22H2 in 4K

Now this one is a sudden bitch to run on modern OS and h/w - considering that it is id Tech 3 which usually means smooth sailing.

As far as I can tell there are two issues at play in parallel: the game runs out of its memory allocations in modern day super high resolutions and it expects something from the OS which isn't there in Win11.

Ultimately I wasn't successful with running it in 8K (not vanilla game nor OpenJK source port) but I kinda got it working in 4K without issues.

To do that I had to use OpenJK (vanilla game crash with z_malloc errors in both 4K and 8K), patch it with 4GB patch and put it into XP SP2 compatibility mode. This seems like the most stable option to play the game on Windows 11 22H2 in 4K at the moment.

4GB patch may be optional in 4K as the game seem to run okay without it but since it does help somewhat in 8K I think that it wouldn't hurt in 4K either.

XPSP2 compatibility resolves cutscene freezing issues for me. I've tried all the rest which are suggested all around the Internet - fps limit, running windowed, multiple tries - nothing work.

I found this fix: jkhub.org/files/file/938-ultimate-npc-fix/ does anyone know what it's for? The description doesn't explain it.

…Good question. Supposedly it fixes NPCs "going missing", but it's my first time hearing of such a bug in the vanilla game.

Is JAUpscaled actually tested and working? I couldn't find a reference to it anywhere else and the zips are not unpacking properly.

SirYodaJedi (talkcontribs)

I'm pretty sure it's been tested; I'd have to check discussion on the Game Upscale Discord, as I don't have the game. The "zips" are actually a single 7z archive, split into 3 files. Make sure they are all downloaded, then open the one with the .001 extension.

Regardless, it's a dead project, as both people working on it stopped doing so.
