Just submitted an alternate adaptive difficulty fix file

https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/2807-max-payne-flat-difficulty-vanilla-pc-values/

The existing script to remove adaptive difficulty uses the values from the mobile port, as stated. The problem with those is they are massively easier than even the minimum possible difficulty of the PC version, likely tuned for awkward touchscreen controls. They nearly triple the player's health (2.9 multiplier) and appear to make each painkiller dose fully heal to 100%. With those values you can stand still and take over a half dozen point blank shotgun blasts before dying.

I felt these comments (on another fix) were... not appropriate for the file upload description, so here they are, I suppose. If the file gets approved I guess I'll try and edit it in as an alternative.

EDIT: Okay, I did that! Literally the first wiki edit I've done here or anywhere, please be gentle if I screwed up. I swear I mean well.

Nice fix.

The default values fix is broken, it causes an error when used, while the mobile version fix is working as intended.

Bata gaga (talkcontribs)

the error seems to have something to do with the missing line "[Message] String = "player->P_CreateProjectileToBone( end_credits_music_timer, 1, torso );";"

the line is present in the default version file (which causes an error), but not in the mobile one (which works fine).

Blok88 (talkcontribs)

I removed all instances of the line and it works again on my end

Bata gaga (talkcontribs)

I did the same a month ago, and it worked as intended. The OP should do this and upload the re-edited file.

I have now done this! This was a very stupid oversight on my part, the install I originally did this on was over a year old and I had forgotten it had this mod applied: https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/2355-max-payne-echo-of-the-past/

So the difficulty.txt I was using as a base must have been from that. Ugh.

I used RASmaker to extract the original difficulty.txt from x_data.ras, copied the values from neutral again, and tested on the fresh install I confirmed the crash you were seeing with (steam with dgvoodoo/indirectsound/thirteenag's widescreen fix) to make sure. Whoops!

I think this is probably karmic retribution for being impolite about the mobile port stuff.

Bata gaga (talkcontribs)

It is a great fix, mobile difficulty is terrible gameplay-wise, so I don't think it's karma, it's just not fitting for the PC version. Great work on the fix, you fixed the gameplay after 20+ years of payne, no pun intended!

This was probably my 20th+ playthrough, and it was substantially better in every way than any of the previous ones. This fix should be obligatory IMO, especially for the seasoned players, since we rarely die, yet get punished for it by being almost one-shot by every enemy on every turn. Amazing job!

Deton24 (talkcontribs)

@Bata gaga Maybe you could upload your working fix on any hosting service?

Bata gaga (talkcontribs)

I could not, since I have deleted it and uninstalled the game a month ago. Blorgblorgblorg fixed it and uploaded it on the page, so now it should work as intended.

"P2L2.JPG not found" error during the gameplay with Japanese translation applied

I was playing on my i5-2400 PC, and after defeating Rico Muerte... I get this error: https://imgur.com/od1pQ1v . To be precise, It always happen after have viewed the novel part and with Japanese translation applied. Anyone of you ever experienced a similar issue?

Deton24 (talkcontribs)

It's loading screen of part II, chapter 2 level. Maybe the file is really missing. Copy this data folder to Max Payne folder. It contains the missing file (although it's English loading screen). The game will read the file from that folder before any ras files present, but irc, after any mpm mod file if it's picked on launch (importaint only if it contains that file). https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GLYYKcrf1sfdVdGwDWXzk-f6b64j_vm9/view?usp=sharing

You can also extract your Japanese file manually to check if it's really corrupted, or just recompress it back to jpg again if it's some file decoding/encoding problem. Just extract x_japanese.ras file and go to the location from the error. I attached decent GUI, it's partially English. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1yWDacAJnn8I3PCdFNv1hF4fDSTkSuwuP/view?usp=sharing

The -nodialog key works for me with the Steam version, but it causes the game to ignore the graphics settings made in that dialog. Either the default or the lowest settings are probably used instead then. I immediately noticed that the skybox was displayed in 16 bit depth.

Document if both patch 1.05 and vanilla retail dvd are SafeDisc 2.51.020, if so write down how to unpack them with unSafeShit and/or SafeDisc2Cleaner 1.20 (on the line of what I did here)
