The game is able to load Bink Video files in place of the of the AVI movies. So basically intro.bik can replace intro.avi with zero dependency on the Indeo codec.
Re-encoding the AVI movies also works.

Mirh (talkcontribs)

Unless you can get bink to load original frames (I mean, without lossy re-encoding in beween).. I don't think that can be considered a solution.

Trying to make ffdshow work, on the other hand, seems way more farsighted.

Blackbird (talkcontribs)

ffdshow is a mess and not future proof enough. Bink is ideal solution as it will work forever. Besides the converted videos look just fine on my end. They're low-res already so no biggie if there is one additional pixel I won't see.
This was just an observation for future since I don't have a way (yet) to make them work without d3d8to9 wrapper. For personal use it's fine.

Source? It's even foss.

Blackbird (talkcontribs)

Mess as in bloated and ancient by design.

Mirh (talkcontribs)

DirectShow ancient? Perhaps.

But it's not bloated by itself. And look, this is exactly the case where its reeeeealy lax design totally helps.

Will it return to steam???

PlayaOfGames (talkcontribs)

Now that is it is now sold on gmg and uses playfire would this up the possibly of it returning to steam.

Blackbird (talkcontribs)

It is possible, but who knows? It's not like 2K even acknowledged anything about the game.

Mirh (talkcontribs)

I feel lucky to have bought it 4 years ago. :p

Nevertheless, some speculate it was due to an expired music license (but there's no official confirmation)

And there's definitively something weird if in 2015 they chose to use SecuROM..

Blackbird (talkcontribs)

Can you confirm if it contains Czech language? I don't really care for subtitles, but the dialogue is so much better.

Mirh (talkcontribs)

Nope. Everything I can see is the usual EFIGS. I'll download it and look if there are some hidden files.

But anyway, I believe Italian should be the dubbing language of choice (I mean, I remember it was pretty good. I dunno if english couldn't have been better)

Blackbird (talkcontribs)

Well it's the original language and I'm Czech so it's nice to hear an actually good and funny voice acting in my native tongue :)
Thanks for looking into this. Incase it comes to Steam I guess I'll use files from my retail copy.
Oh and obviously the note I put about it being retail-only was pure guesswork from the Steam store page when it was up.

Mirh (talkcontribs)

Well, especially in the past when motion capture wasn't a thing, I believe that original language superiority is not really a dogma

Anyway, I unpacked "tables" with the data extractor and there are indeed two file named lang_cz.def and textdb_cz.def, together with _de, _en and _it versions (which is already weird since I thought that when I selected Italian I would have got only the later)

just for the records, albeit the majority of the sounds in the corresponding archive were properly localized in my language of choice, I found some files (e.g. 8_restaurant#) which seemed in English. And 19_talk# which seemed something... I really cannot understand.

Said this, though, bear in mind previously mentioned _cz are just 1KB big, so I guess they are just placeholder

Blackbird (talkcontribs)

I guess the Czech version is a special case, because I recall there being separate patches.
I assume A0.dta contains all languages? In my case there is only Czech dialogue.

Mirh (talkcontribs)

A0.dta (sounds) contains just Italian language here (expectedly)

I just wanted to point out how some speech files (between miscellaneous audio files) haven't been dubbed.

And that they are either English, or something else

Blackbird (talkcontribs)

Ah so Steam downloads language specific A0.dta so that'll make it really easy to replace.
Not surprising at all. There is too much dialogue to be covered. It's probably why GTAs are always English audio only.

The EA Origin support told me that they would discuss with the development team and that Battlefield 2 would eventually come back. I wouldn't trust the support answers, I wouldn't get too optimistic just yet.

Mirh (talkcontribs)

Indeed, saying: "we'll get in touch with development team" is not the same of "development team is working on it"

And I guess that an indirect report like this would very easily manage to report the same thing about both statements

Blackbird (talkcontribs)

I really hope so. It's great game and it's such a shame it's not digital :(

Blackbird (talkcontribs)

Yup this one is amazing. Even has a way to set distance and it seems to automatically set FoV, but not manually however.

Mirh (talkcontribs)

I'm too in a hurry to test well it :S

Also.. is it open source? And does it support Steam version?

Blackbird (talkcontribs)

Source is included with it. Err I don't have Steam version lol. It however works with 1.2 CZE well so I'd say so.
