Does it still crash after the last patch? SDL2 has been updated and I recall seeing some hotplugging related notes in its recent changelog - so likely the issue has been resolved now.

Can't reproduce crashing anymore and game seems to now support both XInput and DirectInput controllers hotplugging better than well.
