Issues fixed

Game boots to black

Download SteamVR[4]
Be sure SteamVR is downloaded, installed, and running before starting the game
If installing via the Steam Store isn't possible, you may need to search for SteamVR in your Library under "Tools"
Modify OpenSSL environment variable for newer Intel processors[5][6]
This environment variable expresses various processor capabilities, which can help define support for some newer Intel processors
  1. Open the "System" menu in Settings (for example, right-click on the Windows Start menu and select "System")
  2. Within the side-panel, select "Advanced system settings"
  3. In the new "System properties" window, within the "Advanced" panel, click the "Environment Variables" button
  4. At the bottom of the new "Environment Variables" window, within the "System variables" subsection, select "New" and enter the following values:
Variable name: OPENSSL_ia32cap
Variable value: ~0x200000200000000
  1. Reboot
Install Platform Update for Windows 7[7]
Windows 7 users should ensure that the Platform Update for Windows 7 (KB2670838) is installed.
Delete save file[8]

Game crashes when playing first DVD

Disable 1-channel audio devices[8]
The default audio device must support at least 2 channels. In particular SteelSeries headphones seem to cause issues with this game.
  1. Right-click the speaker icon in the system tray within the Windows taskbar and select "Open sound settings"
  2. In the side-panel of the new "Settings" window, select "Sound Control Panel"
  3. Within the new "Sound" window, right click on the multi-channel headset you'd like to set as the primary audio device, and click "Set as Default Device"

Unplayable lag

Disable Malwarebytes[9]
It may be possible to add the game / SteamVR to the Malwarebytes exclusion list

Notes

  1. File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/469610/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (469610) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
