Resident Evil HD Remaster[Note 1] is a singleplayer survival horror game co-developed by K2 and Tose and published by Capcom. It is part of the Resident Evil series.

The game is an enhanced re-release of the 2002 GameCube game Resident Evil[Note 2], which itself is a remake of the 1996 game of the same name and chronologically set after the event of Resident Evil 0 and followed by Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. The HD Remaster features redone lighting, upscaled and enhanced textures, a new "Very Easy" difficulty, a new optional control scheme (tank controls are optional), BSAA outfits from Resident Evil 5, and 60 FPS support.

The game was released on January 20, 2015.

The game speed is tied to the frame rate and as such, it will slow down when it start dropping frames with either 30 FPS or 60 FPS options selected, and the only way to avoid it is to choose the variable frame rate option. Because the game's internal rendering resolution is always renders at 1920x1440, it can cause performance issues on some low range systems (See Poor performance or slowdowns for workaround). There is also a bug where some soundtracks in the game are reproduced faster than the original version, which requires a patch.

Player can toggle between original 4:3 or cropped pan-and-scan 16:9. The game uses pre-rendered backgrounds which are all stuck in 4:3.
In 16:9 aspect ratio, the 4:3 backgrounds are cropped and zoomed in with a camera pan added as the character moves higher and lower on the screen. Many areas are still cropped on the top or bottom in 16:9. FMVs and cutscenes are also cropped in 16:9.
Adjust aspect ratio[citation needed]
  1. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
  2. Open config.ini.
  3. Add Aspect=4:3 under [DISPLAY] section (adjust it accordingly)

Notes

Make sure to still use in-game 4:3 setting
The game will no longer be letterboxed during gameplay, but all FMVs and 2D elements will be squished from 16:9 (even 4:3 FMVs)[1]
Putting Aspect=16:10 removes letterboxing in 16:10 screens but is stretched vertically

Mute on focus lost

Set mute in background[5]
  1. Install Special K by following the Special K Unofficial Guide. Manual local installation may work better.
  2. Start the game and press Ctrl+ Shift+← Backspace to toggle Special K's Control Panel.
  3. Expand Window Management and Input/Output Behavior.
  4. Enable Mute Game under Background Behavior.

Issues fixed

Swapped animations

In the elevator of the laboratory, the one that goes into the lowest floor, the animations of going up and down are swapped. This can cause a minor confusion in the player.[7]
Download Fix for swapped elevator animations in Resident Evil HD Remaster

Game fails to start

The game may fail to start on newer systems, displaying a black window for a brief moment before quitting.
The first cause may be NVIDIA's Enhanced GPU Scaling feature.
Disable Enhanced GPU Scaling
  1. Open the NVIDIA Control Panel
  2. Navigate to Manage 3D settings
  3. Select Image Sharpening
  4. Deselect the GPU Scaling checkbox, and apply settings
The second cause may be that the game does not support very high resolutions.
Disable Dynamic Super Resolution
  1. Open the NVIDIA Control Panel
  2. Navigate to Manage 3D settings
  3. Select DSR - Factors
  4. Disable scaling factors that create resolutions much higher than 4K, and apply settings.

In my testing, 5K (5120×2880) will crash the game, but 4703×2645 (4K at 1.50×) does not. Ultra-wide resolutions, such as 3840×1600, may also cause the game to crash.

The third cause may be NVIDIA'S Vertical sync setting.
Disable Vertical sync in NVIDIA Control Panel
  1. Open the NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Navigate to Manage 3D settings.
  3. Set Vertical sync to either Use the 3D application setting or Off.

If this solves the issue, you can create an exception for this game in the Program Settings tab. That way, you can have Vertical sync enabled globally for your other games, but have it disabled only for this game.

The fourth cause may be output colour depth set too high.
Switch to 8 bpc
  1. Open the NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Navigate to Change resolution.
  3. Set Output colour depth to 8 bpc.

Poor performance or slowdowns

The mod below works by removing an unneeded call to query the game for its current state every frame, potentially improving performance.
Use Resident Evil Fusion Fix
  1. Extract to <path-to-game>.
  2. Open scripts\ResidentEvil.FusionFix.ini.
  3. Change DisableCreateQuery = 0 to DisableCreateQuery = 1.
The mod below allows you to override the texture creation parameters (width and height) that the game uses while creating the various textures. This can help with lower-end systems that have FPS problems.
Adjust texture rendering resolution[8]
  1. Download Resident Evil HD Remaster slowdown fix.
  2. Copy the contents to the installation folder.
  3. Adjust the texture rendering resolution in rehd_resfix.ini.

Crashes before/after cutscenes (ERR08 : Memory overrun)

The x86 executable only uses 2GB of RAM, which can cause crashes.
Use 4GB Patch tool[9]
No longer possible after the August 2023 update, which packed the executable with SteamStub DRM. Requires de-obfuscating the executable with Steamless or downgrading to an older version.[10]

Run the game at screen refresh rate

Fullscreen mode only offers the option to use a refresh rate of 60 Hz or less, even if the screen refresh rate is set higher than that.
Set screen refresh rate[5]
  1. Install Special K version 0.8.65 by following the Special K Unofficial Guide. Manual local installation may work better.
  2. Start the game once and close it to allow the configuration file of Special K to be created.
  3. Open <path-to-game>\d3d9.ini or %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Mods\SpecialK\Profiles\bhd.exe\SpecialK.ini depending on the installation method you used.
  4. Change RefreshRate=-1 to RefreshRate=0 under [Render.FrameRate].
Use ForceFix
  1. Install recommended software and system updates, if for Windows 7, under Ideal Conditions from Steam Guide.
  2. Download version of ForceFix for your operating system from Steam Guide.
  3. Unpack the archive and launch ForceFix.
  4. For refresh rates above 60 Hz, set frequency under Custom tab and Apply.

Notes

By default, the refresh rate in the game will go back to normal once you close the program. You can change it by unchecking Restore on Close option.

Mouse cursor visible during gameplay

Use Resident Evil Fusion Fix
Auto-hide mouse cursor[5]
  1. Install Special K by following the Special K Unofficial Guide. Manual local installation may work better.
  2. Start the game and press Ctrl+ Shift+← Backspace to toggle Special K's Control Panel.
  3. Expand Input Management and Mouse Cursor.
  4. Enable Hide When Not Moved and adjust Seconds Before Hiding to your liking.

RE1 real time graphics mod incompatible with Special K

Fix compatibility issues[11]
  1. Install the Resident Evil 1 real time graphics mod to the installation folder.
  2. Rename its d3d9.dll to something else, e.g. visiond3d9.dll.
  3. Do the manual local installation of Special K by following the Special K Unofficial Guide.
  4. Start the game once and close it to allow the configuration file of Special K to be created.
  5. Add the following to Special K's d3d9.ini file. Adjust visiond3d9 to the proper name from step two.
[Import.visiond3d9]
Architecture=Win32
Role=ThirdParty
When=PlugIn
Filename=visiond3d9.dll

RE.net Account Link Data Upload Crash

August 2023 patch removed a file that was essential for uploading data to RE.net resulting in a fatal error when attempting to link an account.
Download missing serviceinfo file[12]
  1. Open the Steam console 'steam://nav/console' and type download_depot 304240 304242 3831846201811674141 in the console window then press enter. Wait for the depot to download.
  2. Go to <path-to-game>\nativePC\mnlts and delete the serviceinfo folder.
  3. Go to <Steam-folder>\steamapps\content\app_304240\depot_304242\nativePC\mnlts\serviceinfo.file and copy the serviceinfo.file file in to <path-to-game>\nativePC\mnlts
