Key points

As game only runs on 640x480 resolution, it may cause problems with modern systems. See Widescreen resolution or R.E.L.I.V.E. Source Port how to run the game with monitors native resolution.

Video

Widescreen resolution

Game is always 640x480, which may cause problems with modern systems.
This method will only raise output resolution to match desktop's one, game will still render at 640x480.
Installing DDhack[6]
  1. Download the DirectDraw hack.
  2. Extract it into the installation folder.
  3. Launch the game and it should run at your current desktop resolution.

Notes

This fix only works from Windows Vista onwards.
This fix does not resolve graphical issues (like screen flicker) on the steam release. Consider using dgvoodoo2 instead.

Issues fixed

Crashes on launch

Error message titled "E:\Abe\POS\MYDDRAW.C" with messages "Can't set mode trying 640x480x8", "Can't set mode trying 640x480x16" and "SetMode failed err=-2147467263".
See Widescreen resolution for possible solution for fullscreen or use R.E.L.I.V.E. Source Port.

Running the game on 64-bit Windows

Only affects original retail version. Not needed for currently digitally distributed versions.
Manually install the game[citation needed]
  1. Manually copy ALL the *.DDV and *.LVL files from CD, along with the AbeWin.exe, to a new folder, 126 files in total.
  2. For program compatibility options, select "Windows 2000", then run the executable. Windows will prompt you for the CD, which you can skip, and the game will work as it should.

Notes

You don't need the CD to run the game, as the EXE has all the files it needs in its folder, eliminating the slower loading times from the CD.

Notes

  1. 1.0 1.1 When running this game without elevated privileges (Run as administrator option), write operations against a location below %PROGRAMFILES%, %PROGRAMDATA%, or %WINDIR% might be redirected to %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore on Windows Vista and later (more details).
  2. 2.0 2.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/15700/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (15700) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
