Essential improvements

Installing and running the game on modern Windows

Depending on the operating system and hardware the game may run fine already after installation, or all the following steps may be needed to make it run. Before proceeding with any step run the game to test if it works first.
Instructions[citation needed]
  1. Put the LEGO Rock Raiders CD into the CD drive (cancel the setup if it starts automatically). Download and run LEGO Rock Raiders Alternate Installer to install the game.
  2. Open the LEGO Rock Raiders CD and copy the Data folder to the installation folder and replace existing files when asked.
  3. Download LEGO Rock Raiders Masterpiece edition executable. Extract the archive and copy the LegoRR.exe to the installation folder and replace the existing file.
  4. Right click LegoRR.exe or appropriate shortcut, select Properties and in the Compatibility tab set the following:
    1. Compatibility mode - Run this game in compatibility mode for Windows 98/Windows ME.
    2. Settings - Disable visual themes, Disable desktop composition.
    3. Privilege level - Run this program as an administrator.
    4. Click Apply and OK.
  5. Download dgVoodoo 2, extract the archive and copy all the files from the MS folder to the installation folder. When starting the game, a Mode selection window should appear with dgVoodoo DirectX Wrapper being recognized as the main driver, click OK to continue.

Notes

Under Windows 10 disabling visual themes is not available and compatibility mode can cause the game to lag and be displayed incorrectly. Try with and without compatibility mode.
Under Windows 10 not setting compatibility mode can cause movies to not play. Try with and without compatibility mode. Also try setting compatibility mode to Windows XP (Service Pack 2)

Issues fixed

"The program can't start because d3drm.dll is missing" error

Add d3drm.dll to the installation folder[citation needed]
  1. In the Rock Raiders CD, go to DirectX6\DirectX6\Directx
  2. Copy D3DRM.DLL and paste it into the installation folder (the default is C:\Program Files (x86)\LEGO Media\Games\Rock Raiders).

"No DirectX 3D accelerator could be found"

This also fixes cutscenes not playing and a low FPS issue.
Setup the game compatibility settings[citation needed]
  1. Right click on LegoRR.exe file (located in the installation folder; the default is C:\Program Files (x86)\LEGO Media\Games\Rock Raiders) and select "Properties".
  2. Go to the "Compatibility" tab and enable Compatibility Mode (set it to "Windows XP (Service Pack 3)"). For Windows 8 and later, also enable Reduced Colour Mode (set to 16-bit).
  3. Run the game from the exe directly. When shown the display options, set the screen mode to Windowed.

Crash when launching the game

Force the game to emulate RGB for Voodoo 2 cards[citation needed]
  3. Run the game with the -ftm EXE parameter.
  4. Select RGB Emulation (Microsoft Direct3D RGB Software Emulation and Full Screen.

The installer on the CD doesn't work

Use alternate installer[citation needed]
Extract the game files manually[citation needed]
  1. Download a program that can extract .cab files, such as Universal Extractor.
  2. Extract the data1.cab file on your disc to wherever you want to install the game.
  3. Open the EXE folder on the CD, and copy the two files into the folder you installed the game in.

Command line parameters

See command line arguments on how to use the following options.
A full list is available at the Rock Raiders United Knowledge Base, but here are the major ones:
Parameter Description
-cleansaves Deletes all saved games.
-programmer Allows the LEGO Media movie to be skipped.
-fpslock Enables VSync.
-testlevels Unlocks every level.
-window Allows the game to be launched in a window when in 16-bit color mode.
-best Disables the Mode selection window on launch.
-ftm This makes the video card use all available texture memory. Also turns off game lighting. Lighting still affects game models.
-fvf Causes models and level terrain in the distance to fade into a gradual fog effect rather than cutting off abruptly at the draw distance boundary.
-debug Allows resolutions up to 1024x768, but crashes on everything greater than 640x480.
-reducesamples Disables some non-streamed sound effects.
Original game installer would create two shortcuts:
  1. LEGO Rock Raiders - Standard with parameters -best -reducesamples -reduceanimation -reducepromeshes -reduceflics -reduceimages.
  2. LEGO Rock Raiders - Enhanced with parameters -best.

Notes

  1. SafeDisc retail DRM does not work on Windows 10[1] or Windows 11 and is disabled by default on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 when the KB3086255 update is installed.[2]
  2. 2.0 2.1 When running this game without elevated privileges (Run as administrator option), write operations against a location below %PROGRAMFILES%, %PROGRAMDATA%, or %WINDIR% might be redirected to %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore on Windows Vista and later (more details).
  3. Applications writing to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE will be redirected to other locations based on various criterias, see the glossary page for more details.
