Patches

Patches for the full game can be found under the section "バージョンアップ差分DL" (Version Upgrade Download) from the game's official website. Download the patches marked as "ver1.02f" and "ver1.02h", then install them in that order. You may need to rename the game's executable from th06.exe to "東方紅魔郷.exe" and run the patches under Japanese Unicode settings to properly install them.[2]

Controller support

A fix is required for the game to recognize XInput D-pad and analog triggers when assigning controls.
Use XInput Plus[2]
  1. Download and run XInput Plus.
  2. Set the Target Program to th06.exe (or translated variations thereof).
  3. Go to the Key Assign tab, then go to Left Stick and assign it to Multiple Key, then check Left Stick and DPAD.
  4. Go to the DirectInput tab, and check Enable DirectInput Output, and set Guide Button to Button 13.
  5. Click Customize, then assign the following for these drop-down menu respectively:
    • Left/Right Trigger as Button 7/8
    • Back/View and Start/Menu as Button 9 and Button 10
    • Left/Right Stick Button as Button 11/12
  6. Click Apply then OK to save settings and install DLLs. The game should be able to register XInput D-pad and analog triggers as DirectInput buttons.

See MIDI Option with Sound Canvas VA for accurate playback.

MIDI Option with Sound Canvas VA

The game's MIDI option was intended to be used with a Roland SC-88 Pro. Alternatively, an officially released software synth called Sound Canvas VA can be used, which emulates all four Sound Canvas modules, including the SC-88 Pro
Instructions
  1. Download SAVIHost.
  2. Place the SAVIHost EXE in C:\ProgramData\Roland Cloud\Sound Canvas VA, and rename it SOUND Canvas VA.exe.
  3. Install LoopMIDI and MIDIMapper
  4. Open LoopMIDI and the EXE you renamed.
  5. In SAVIHost, make sure to click "Options" and then "SYSTEM" in the Sound Canvas VA interface, and set the Map Mode to "SC-88Pro"
  6. Go to the Devices menu, and select "MIDI". Then set "Input Port 1" to "loopMIDI Port"
  7. Open MIDIMapper, and set the default MIDI device to "loopMIDI Port".

Notes

Unless Sound Canvas VA is registered, it will only play for 10 minutes before it stops playing. This can somewhat be alleviated by simply closing the SAVIHost window, and opening it again.

Issues fixed

Game will not install on Windows 10

The game's installer executable may not work under Windows 10, even with compatibility fixes and running under Japanese Unicode Settings. It can however still be manually installed by simply copying the game folder (th06) from the CD-ROM to your computer.[2]

Fullscreen issues on Windows 10

Players have reported the game runs at an uncapped and unstable frame-rate on Windows 10 when played on fullscreen mode, even when using game's internal frame-rate cap enabled.[4] Other potential issues include the game not displayed properly on fullscreen (i.e. game window and title bar being visible on fullscreen) and DLL "Entry Point Not Found" errors.

Download ENBSeries DX8 to DX9 Converter and extract its contents to <path-to-game> (recommended)[4][5]
Alternatively could use Ultimate ASI Loader (which integrates Crosire's d3d8to9) by renaming dinput8.dll to d3d8.dll and adding the following to a global.ini file:
[GlobalSets]
UseD3D8to9=1

This allows other files that would modify d3d8.dll to be loaded by renaming their extension to '.asi'.

Download DirectX 8 Fullscreen Fix and extract its contents to <path-to-game>[citation needed]
Another option is dgVoodoo, which converts DX8 to directx11, and allows tweaking such as increasing resolution, anti-aliasing, and texture filtering.[citation needed]
There is an issue where resolutions higher that 640x480 causes tiling on the background border when combined with any sort of texture filtering.
Alternatively, download the Touhou Patch Center's Unicode vpatch DLL and extract its contents to <path-to-game>.
This patch does not modify d3d8.dll, freeing it up to be modified by other patches.
Input lag can be reduced if combined with one of the above fixes

Retexture Patch

Requires the latest official patches and English fan-translation patch.
Enhances the overall look of the game to be comparable to the series' later installments with cleaner, higher resolution assets.
Installing the Retexture Patch[2]
  1. Download the patch from here, then extract its contents to its own folder.
  2. Copy the th06e_ST.DAT from the Retexture Patch folder into <path-to-game>.
  3. Next, chose which preferred hitbox type you prefer from the Retexture Patch (Visible Hitbox or Invisible Hitbox; use Invisible for compatibility with Hitbox Patch) and copy its th06e_TL.DAT and th06e_CM.DAT into <path-to-game>.
  4. Finally, chose your preferred soundpack you wish you use from the Sound folder (Original, Perfect Cherry Blossom, Imperishable Night, or Subterranean Animism), then copy its th06e_IN.DAT into <path-to-game>.
  5. Now launch the game. You should noticed a drastic change with the game's visuals.

Hitbox Patch

Displays the player's hitbox whenever the Focus key ( Shift) is pressed like later games.
Loaded through d3d8.dll, use either the vpatch or Ultimate ASI Loader for speed issues.

Practice Mode Replay Patch

Allows saving replays from practice mode stages like in later games.

Real Hitbox Patches

Makes bullets' size more accurate to their hitboxes.

Touhou Ultra

Makes the game harder by making bullets faster and in larger quantities.

Touhou Vorbis Compressor

Can save up to 80% of the game's disk space by compressing the game's BGM music files into Ogg Vorbis with little if any effect on the quality.
