Field of view (FOV)

This game uses vertical FOV. See FOV Calculator for help.
FOV can be increased to 85 before severe recoil problems kick in (as mentioned below).
FOV above 85 will cause the hip fire recoil problems, along with causing the first aimed shot to always miss.
Field of View value is tied to how the game calculates hip fire recoil. Setting FOV too high will cause drastically increased recoil, as indicated by an expanded crosshair.[4]
Edit default_levels.xml[5]
  1. Go to <path-to-game>\DI\
  2. Open Data0.pak with 7-Zip.
  3. Inside Data0.pak navigate to data\skills and open default_levels.xml.
  4. Find CameraDefaultFOV and replace 62.5 with your desired FOV.
  5. Save. If 7-Zip asks if you want to update the file in the archive click Yes.

Borderless fullscreen windowed

Use Borderless Gaming[6]
  1. Install Borderless Gaming and run it alongside the game.
  2. In the app, right-click Dead Island and select Add to Favorites by the process binary name
  3. Under Favorites, right-click DeadIslandGame and disable Auto-Maximize
  4. Turn off Fullscreen in the game options

Remove Chromatic Aberration

Has to be modded out because the setting in the Options menu doesn't fully disable Chromatic Aberration.
This new method does not cause any artifacts like the previous method.
Modify Data0.pak
  1. Backup Data0.pak in <path-to-game>\DI\.
  2. Open Data0.pak with 7-Zip.
  3. Navigate to data\scripts inside the archive and use 7-Zip's edit function (F4) on varlist_main.scr.
  4. This will open Notepad. Find the line VarFloat("f_pp_chromatic_aberration_scale", 1.0) and change the 1.0 to 0.0.
  5. Save the file and close Notepad.
  6. 7-Zip will prompt you to update the archive. Click OK.

Remove crosshair

Edit hud.xui[7]
  1. Go to <path-to-game>\DI\
  2. Open Data0.pak with 7-Zip.
  3. Inside Data0.pak navigate to data\menu\hud and extract hud.xui.
  4. Right-click hud.xui, open Properties, uncheck Read-only, click OK.
  5. Open hud.xui with a text editor.
  6. Find the line <Id>HudCrosshair</Id>
  7. Below that, add this on a new line: <Opacity>0.000000</Opacity>
  8. Save the file, and drag and drop it back into the hud folder.

Issues unresolved

Aim Assist

The PC port of DIDE has aim assist. There is no way to disable this.[8]

Use a specific library for Mesa and override the OpenGL Mesa verison at launch[citation needed]
  1. Download and unpack the library file into the games' installation folder
  2. In Set Launch Options... on Steam add this code at the beginning
MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=4.5 MESA_GLSL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=450 %command%
  1. Launch the game.

Broken animations at high framerates

High Frame rates could potentially cause broken animations.[9][dubious – discuss]
Limit the Framerate to 60FPS[citation needed]
