Essential Improvements

Widescreen FOV

The game by default uses Vert- to scale it's FOV, and cannot be increased through the traditional GoldSrc method.
Increase the FOV multiplier
  • Open the console and use cl_fovmultiplier to adjust FOV.
    • 1.18 for 16:9.
    • 2.33 for 21:9.

Notes

Your Hor+ FOV can be calculated by dividing your aspect ratio by width and height.

The game can't be launched at resolutions above 1920x1080 as it will crash, but changing the resolution after the game is loaded (using the in-game menu) works. Menus, text and interface elements become small and hard to read.

Open the console with ~ and type in cl_fovmultiplier XX where XX is the desired value, e.g. 1.2 or 1.3 (default is 1).

Issues fixed

Game zoomed in at 1920x1080 or higher

The game does not adjust to the dekstop's high resolution scaling. When playing at 1920x1080 or higher, the game may become zoomed in.
Enable Override high DPI scaling behaviour
  1. Go to <path-to-game>
  2. Right click on cof.exe or CoFLaunchApp.exe (the fix works on both exes) and choose Properties.
  3. Go to the compatibility tab, and click on Change high DPI settings.
  4. Check the box that says Override high DPI scaling behaviour, and in the dropdown menu, choose Application. Click Apply and then OK.
If the brightness becomes too dark, you can go to the game's Options > Advanced tab then adjust the brightness boost and contrast (the brightness and gamma sliders in the Video tab appear to be broken).[citation needed]
Set the desktop resolution scaling to 100%

Disable Mouse Accelleration

Add -noforcemparms to the launch options

Notes

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 When running this game without elevated privileges (Run as administrator option), write operations against a location below %PROGRAMFILES%, %PROGRAMDATA%, or %WINDIR% might be redirected to %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore on Windows Vista and later (more details).
  2. 2.0 2.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/223710/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (223710) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
