Issues fixed

"Failed to unpack data" error while trying to download Basic Chess Concepts

Modify config.ini to replace broken url with one from internet archive.[2]
  1. Go to <path-to-game>.
  2. Open the config.ini file with Notepad or other text editor.
  3. Using the Find function (Ctrl+F), search for "DownloadTutorials http://www.playfirst.com/go/chessmaster_tutorials". There will be exactly one entry.
  4. Replace the text with "DownloadTutorials http://web.archive.org/web/20070702054217if_/http://www.playfirst.com:80/go/chessmaster_tutorials".
  5. Save the file.
  6. Launch the game.
  7. Go to Learning Academy and download additional lessons.
  8. Backup %PROGRAMDATA%\Chessmaster Challenge\ folder and restore it later to skip above steps after future game reinstalls.

Notes

  1. 1.0 1.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/37200/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (37200) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
