The Longest Journey

From PCGamingWiki, the wiki about fixing PC games

Template:Infobox

The game drew praise from critics for the protagonist April Ryan, considered one of the most memorable female characters in the history of adventure games, and also for its enigmatic, complex storyline and high production values, but was criticized for some of its more obscure puzzles.[1] This game is succeeded by Dreamfall: The Longest Journey.

1) Find the program directory, usually it is in: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\the longest journey\.

2) Run Configure.exe that you'll find in the above directory. Change one of the options (doesn't matter which) and click ok - this will create the config file. You can open Configure.exe again and switch the option back if you want.

3) Now we need to get to the preferences file - this is kept in a user specific directory. As a shortcut to get to where it's stored enter %APPDATA%\The Longest Journey into a Run box (Start menu > Run).

4) Open the Preferences.ini file with Notepad.

5) Under the section that starts with [DirectX] add or change the following settings:

bool_IsDoubleBuffer=0

bool_UseHardware=0

Fix - High Performance Power Plan

If one is playing on a laptop, then changing the power settings has solved the graphical issues for many people. Change the power settings to 'High Performance' in the control panel.[2]

Windowed Mode

Fix - Edit Preferences.ini

Open the Preferences.ini file with Notepad. Under the [DirectX] heading, type bool_StartFullscreen=0 minus quotes, and save your changes.[3]

Fix - Secondary Monitor

Sometimes by connecting an external monitor (second monitor to a desktop) will force the game into "windowed mode", allowing it to run.

Crashes

On some graphics cards, the game will crash upon entering the Police Station. This should be fixed with the 1.61 patch.

Fullscreen Mode

The game sometimes only runs in a window resolution at 640x480.

Fix - Lower Desktop Resolution

Since the game runs in 640x480, often the simplest (although fairly inconvenient) solution to making the game load in fullscreen is to lower the desktop resolution to 640x480 when playing this game.[4]
