Issues
Graphics Problems
There are a number of issues with viewing the Bink encoded movies, and other graphical compatibility issues. The two solution #Fix - Software Mode and #Fix - High Performance Power Plan work for most people, although there are many who still have problems despite this.
Fix - Software Mode
This fix turns off the game's hardware graphics acceleration, which results in a slightly worse visual clarity. This does not have a big impact for most people, as it only affects the 3d models on screen.[1]
1) First we want the game to create the appropriate section in the config file for us.
1) Find the program directory, usually it is in: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\the longest journey\
.
2) Run Configure.exe
that you'll find in the above directory. Change one of the options (doesn't matter which) and click ok - this will create the config file. You can open Configure.exe
again and switch the option back if you want.
3) Now we need to get to the preferences file - this is kept in a user specific directory. As a shortcut to get to where it's stored enter %APPDATA%\The Longest Journey into a Run box (Start menu > Run).
4) Open the Preferences.ini
file with Notepad.
5) Under the section that starts with [DirectX]
add or change the following settings:
bool_IsDoubleBuffer=0
bool_UseHardware=0
Fix - High Performance Power Plan
If one is playing on a laptop, then changing the power settings has solved the graphical issues for many people. Change the power settings to 'High Performance' in the control panel.[2]
Windows 7
This game has many problems with compatibility on newer systems but a fix is available.
Sometimes by connecting an external monitor (second monitor to a desktop) will force the game into "windowed mode", allowing it to run.
Although the game is in windowed mode, it can still be in full screen on one of the two monitors, allowing it to be played in fullscreen.
If anyone has a fix going off this to make it work on one monitor, by all means
Crashes
On some graphics cards, the game will crash upon entering the Police Station. This should be fixed with the 1.61 patch
