Remove Steam006's Fix from Essential Improvements?

2
Arhummk (talkcontribs)

As the title says, SH2 Enhanced Edition has pretty much made every other existing patches redundant as such fixes are already included in EE, implemented by the authors of the respective patches themselves.

So I think this should be removed now so newcomers don't get confused on which patch to install.

Arhummk (talkcontribs)

I've moved it below SH2 HD collection audio for archive purposes, but it would be better if it was removed.

Anti-Aliasing not working (Nvidia)

MSAA/Supersampling doesn't seem to be working by setting it with NVCP according to the instructions presented in the linked webpage and Nvidia Inspector doesn't help either (let alone trying to force SGSSAA). Can anyone confirm this? I'm using Windows 10 64 bits and the latest Nvidia drivers, and the game has the Enhanced Edition mod applied of course, with "FixGPUAntiAliasing" set to 1.

It also seems to get a bit stuttery or have some kind of small frame skipping when I have AA forced on (even though it doesn't work). I'm not entirely sure it is caused by it though, maybe it just happens randomly and I'm thinking it has to do with it. On a sidenote, forcing SMAA by setting "EnableSMAA" to 1 does work, so I'm just using it combined with downsampling (Custom Resolution through NVCP).

Could it be related to the new DX9 renderer included in the Enhanced Edition as opposed to the vanilla DX8 one?

Remove esssential improvements?

I think we should just remove points 2-4 from the "Essential Improvements" section because it's all included in the Enhanced Edition, and there's no reason to install them individually (except for updating). We could condense most of it into one point about the Enhanced Edition. Right now it just seems overly complicated for what is one pretty simple improvement pack, and I think just having one main point would be a lot more readable and concise.

For now though, I'm just going to update it to clarify that all of those are included in the full Enhanced Edition installation. I just want someone else's opinion before making such a big change.

edit: I actually don't know if the Steam006 fix is fully included in EE. Does this fix add something that EE doesn't? If yes, we can leave that part in and condense the FMV and audio packs into the EE point; if it's obsolete then it's probably better to just remove it if EE does all of it.

Hello, the game was working fine with minor problems (music in loop, cutscenes Don't play) but it was alright until i got to a door that opens but the next scene doesn't load. It's just black. The door opening and closing plays normally. What can I possibly do to fix this?

Redsugar (talkcontribs)

Thank you for responding. I tried to play again and bingo: it worked. Right after the door there was a cutscene, I think that because most of the cutscenes don't play it causd the game to crash. I kept up playing and the same thing happened twice, the game crahses or James simply stops moving, and everytime it happens I start reloading again and again until it works. I don't really understand why it happens though ...

Issues with audio when using Widescreen Fix

The article isn't as informative as it used to be due to moved or deleted keypoints

2
Mars icecream (talkcontribs)

the current keypoints:

Unofficial mods enhance the game and make it more playable on modern systems.
Silent Hill 2 PC comes with improved flashlight lighting, a quick-save function, real-time weapon swapping, and a movie gallery.
Frame rate is capped at 30 FPS; use Silent Hill 2 Enhancements to fix.

Information about downgraded shadows, audio and FMVs has been moved elsewhere and the fog effects don't even have their own keypoint anymore — "Silent Hill 2 Enhancements is a collection of unofficial mods which implement widescreen resolution support, add PlayStation 2 quality audio and fog[...]" — to my knowledge no one has ported the PS2 fog to PC, the effect was recreated, wasn't it?

I learned about the massive issues in the Silent Hill PC ports from PC Gaming Wiki, without the great articles I'd likely have completed the unfinished versions. I'd argue that in the current state of the page new users don't learn about the fog especially.

Even when issues can be improved or solved by mods, negatives should stay negative.

SirYodaJedi (talkcontribs)

Especially if you need mods. The key points should link to the further fixes (they do). I would go ahead and modify the first key point to mention that Several features are downgraded compared to PS2 version; use unofficial mods to fix. If that is an accurate analysis, I would add that as a second key point.

All negative keypoints have been changed to informative

Can only run stably on a single core: both the North American and European Director's Cut version are compatible to use with the Silent Hill 2 Widescreen Fix and accompanied fix packages.
Atmospheric fog and the shadowing are much simpler and less refined than the PlayStation 2 version.[1] See Fog Fix
FMVs suffer significantly in quality compared to the other versions.[2] See FMV Enhacement Pack
Frame rate is capped at 30 FPS. See High frame rate to raise frame rate cap.

Is there a reason behind this change? I see all of the points as "objectively" negative.

Mirh (talkcontribs)

Indeed. I mean, I can see why one would want to change minor issues to just informative, after they have been fixed.

But seriously, just like GTA III-era games, there's a limit on how much that can be straightforwardly easy for the user, and there's a limit after which even a perfectioned game would still feel like an insult.

Mars icecream (talkcontribs)

I see that the information keypoint should be used for neutral information, not as a middle-ground between positive and negative. The articles are about the games itself and mods are additional information, like they are mentioned in the keypoint paragraphs.

Mars icecream (talkcontribs)

Why was lower quality audio keypoint removed?

Someone probably removed it because it was fixed by a mod, but I'll revert that.

sh2fix does not work at all for me

2
AmethystViper (talkcontribs)

I tried to use sh2fix but the game hangs and does not start at all or the compatible *exe gets delete before the game can even be launched at all. I don't know if this is because of my anti-virus suspects something with the files of sh2fix but VirusTotal shows there is either a false positive or some malicious code in the files. Whatever the case may be it fails to run the game unlike ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix.

Mirh (talkcontribs)

Yes, of course it's not going to work if your AV interferes

But tbh, it wouldn't be bad if you could reach that guy and tell him it sucks when manpower is wasted by overlapping efforts.

Can the creators of sh2proxy and the Widescreen Fix make a single superior version?

4
Devina (talkcontribs)

Currently, the Widescreen Fix is essentially superior, but it doesn't allow for windowed mode or borderless windowed mode, nor does it have an option for fullscreen FMVs. It's stupid having two separate wrappers with their own pros and cons.

Widescreen Fix

SH2proxy

AmethystViper (talkcontribs)

Widescreen Fix does have windowed mode, and you can use a program like Borderless Gaming to make it borderless fullscreen. The windowed mode option is in d3d8.ini as ForceWindowedMode=.

Mirh (talkcontribs)

Indeed, just hours after your comment, "activity" basically moved to WS fix.

AmethystViper (talkcontribs)

It looks like Widescreen Fix now has support for the Widescreen FMV Pack. The page for shows the SH2 Widescreen Fix was updated some time ago and there's new options in the SilentHill2.Widescreen.ini for the Widescreen FMV Pack.
