DXVK is a dangerous recommendation

Paynamia (talkcontribs)

I tried using DXVK as recommended to improve performance, and "Causes graphical issues," is the understatement of a lifetime. It sometimes caused extremely rapid and bright flashing that definitely falls within the "could cause an epileptic seizure" category, not to mention causing constant crashes. In my opinion, this section should be removed from the page, but at the very least, it needs a big, bold warning about maybe killing the player.

I've already added the warning, as it would be negligent for me not to, but I still believe it should be removed outright.

To be honest i have always been really skeptical about DXVK on Windows in general. The "improves performance" claims people make are questionable most (all?) of the time and the promblems it causes (crashes on launch, random crashes during gameplay, graphics glitches, etc) make DXVK even less worth it. I think it should be used only for its intended purpose, on Linux with Wine.

Qinlili (talkcontribs)

I profiled several games to figure out why DXVK imporves performance on some games, and finally found the reason.

Games which reach CPU bottleneck rather than GPU bottleneck can get performance improvement from DXVK. This is due to DXVK activates Vulkan pipeline cache which do not need to compile again and again when load shaders, which reduces CPU usage. When more spare CPU can be used by the logic processing, the performance gains. This can be verified with games which eat all CPU such as Watch Dogs 2, with a really weak or throttled CPU. DXVK on these games can dramatically reduce CPU usage and increase GPU usage to gain more FPS.

However, when GPU bottleneck is reached, DXVK provides negative improvement on performance on most circumstances since API converting needs resources. Special cases exist, such as Intel's poorly optimized DX9 driver comes with more overhead than API converting.

Actually, SR2 is a single-thread game and needs high frequency CPU (for my own estimate, >4.0Ghz is the minimum requirement to ensure 60 FPS for 99% time) as it was first released on XBOX 360 which has a 3.2Ghz CPU. SR2 always reaches CPU bottleneck on mobile CPU which has a lower frequency. This is why some players report that DXVK improved performance. However, for those who have a really powerful CPU such as 14900K, there is no need to use DXVK.

TLDR: DXVK should only be used on games with CPU bottleneck on devices with weak CPU. It is suggested for users with a CPU lower than 4.0Ghz to use DXVK for SR2.

Occasionally, sure, but not all the time since both I and Kaldaien have actually confirmed such claims in the past. So the claims can very much be real, but as always with all third-party stuff YMMV.

I can't speak of this game, but in general crashes, graphical glitches, etc that's caused by DXVK are quite rare in my experience. That tool is in many cases more stable than dgVoodoo 2 on Windows, to the point where I often recommend it over dgVoodoo 2. But as always, YMMV.

Some issues might be caused by the fact that DXVK by default fakes being an Nvidia card towards the game, if I remember it right, which depending on the game and underlying AMD hardware might not be the best option. It can, as with many other things, be disabled in DXVK's configuration file.

>Some issues might be caused by the fact that DXVK by default fakes being an Nvidia card towards the game

According to the config file, it's the opposite.

"Report Nvidia GPUs as AMD GPUs by default. This is enabled by default to work around issues with NVAPI, but may cause issues in some games."

In which case, it shouldn't be doing anything since I have an AMD GPU.

Ah, right, my mistake.

The upcoming Saints Row 2 Updated Port should be on a separated page

Nclok1405 (talkcontribs)

The developers have confirmed that the updated SR2 is going to be released as a separate game (will be free for existing owners at Steam) and existing saves from the old version won't be compatible. (Source: https://steamcommunity.com/app/9480/discussions/0/1608274347718992744/?ctp=4#c2803982773086805444)

Lots of bugs and workarounds of the old 2009 version will be irrelevant as well. I don't think any timing related issues will be in the upcoming port.

Due to having a new appid and lots of content and internal differences, I think the new Saints Row 2 port should deserve a separate page in this wiki.

I've been making a stub page for the upcoming SR2 port in User:Nclok1405/SaintsRow2UpdatedStub. I'm planning to move it to the main namespace when the new SR2's appid is announced, but any opinions are welcome.

Aemony (talkcontribs)

A new page is appropriate seeing how it will get a new entry in the library as well as have incompatible saves.

However I'm somewhat adverse to re-using a lot of the information from the old page. The "cleanest" way of ensuring that no incorrect data carries over is to start from scratch with a clean sample article on the new page (will most likely be called "Saints Row 2 (2020)" or something similar) and then fill it out as new information gets confirmed or known about the re-release. This was the way Borderlands: Game of the Year Enhanced, for exmaple, was handled.

AlexKVideos1 (talkcontribs)

I'm pretty sure the new re-release is getting a different name, I believe they said that in the Discord. We just don't know what the name will be yet.

The patch will never ever going to be released.

Mazewaliztli47 (talkcontribs)

Yes, volition is closed permanently 8/31/2023, so the patch is dead and cancelled.

Nclok1405 (talkcontribs)

I already assumed the patch/rerelease is soft cancelled (Deep Silver never post a proof such as a screenshot) but now it is completely safe to assume this project is dead. Even if by some miracle Deep Silver or Embracer outsources the PC patch to an outside studio, it'll most likely be very different from what Mike "IdolNinja" Watson and Volition was working on.

bcdedit /set useplatformclock true breaking other games

I'm not sure if only for me, but using this cmd command makes it so games like both Forza Horizons stop rendering the map properly and most of my other games hang for something like 10/15 seconds after closing, or in some cases, when starting. BUT for some reason, using command "bcdedit /set useplatformclock false" after using the original command, fixes both issues.

Should we keep a link to GOG FPS Patcher?

4
Nclok1405 (talkcontribs)

Hopefully it is a false positive, but the tool is flagged by many antivirus software. (www.virustotal.com/de/file/b71b21f921292725acc567e29380cc156fce001f08baada2c76942c0232bd610/analysis/1492949061/)

Can I change the link to an alternative patcher (originally programmed by adamhm for Linux, recompiled for Windows by me)? It is less likely to get flagged and the patcher's source code is available, but it lacks GUI (though it has batch scripts)

Nclok1405 (talkcontribs)

Here is the alternative patcher's URL: saintsrowmods.com/forum/threads/sr2-gog-fps-unlocker.18288

Aemony (talkcontribs)

Feel free to do so.

It could be that the original file is a false positive (especially based on the "generic", "HackTools", "patchers", "machine learning" etc labels shown for it), but it's better safe than sorry -- even 48/71 detections is a bit excessive for a false positive I think.

Nclok1405 (talkcontribs)

Thanks for replying. I have changed the link and rewrote the instructions.

Czech, Danish, Dutch, and Swedish subtitles ( Image: imgur dot com/a/6TmVIYf )

Nclok1405 (talkcontribs)

Currently Danish, Dutch, and Swedish have "subtitles = false" in the Wiki, and Czech's status is unknown. I'm not familiar with these languages. However, I've played these languages and each have unique, non-English subtitles. If no one debunks me, I'll change them to "subtitles = true".

Saints Row 2 crash on startup

2
RalphORama (talkcontribs)

I'm not sure why this is happening, but some background first. During a Steam sale a few weeks ago, I bought Saints Row 2, and installed it, only to find it crashes as soon as I launch the game. I naturally tried reinstalling and running in compatibility mode, to no avail. I have contacted THQ and will post something on the wiki page if they respond.

Does anyone else have this problem or similar ones?

Newmansan (talkcontribs)

Can't say I have, but let's run through the usual troubleshooting steps:

Did you try running it as an administrator? Did you try verifying the game cache? Are your drivers up to date? Does it do this on any other games?
