I get this message with this patch - Kain.exe is modified and can be incompatible. Previous version of verok's patch (which is not available anymore?) worked normal.

this dll is from 3d sound drivers\applications. Uncheck 3d audio. Should be working though. And if your system not support 3d audio - it jsut not work, but checkbox itself shouldnt cause any launching errors.

Also, saw this error happened on some japanese user blog (he have Japan Win CD version). But he describe too many steps he did to launch game on japan WinXP. Both CD and GOG versions should be installed as is (for CD - copy Help and KAIN\KAIN folders to install location) - and only Veroks wrapper-mod applied above. Do not install any bink\winxp\x64\etc patches or mods. Do not set any compatibilities except adminrun. Verok also provide a tool to check if there is any compatibilities. GOG always set some, even when not needed. For CD version better to opy Help+Kain CD folders and kain.exe, for GOG version better install-backup-uninstall the game. And extract full version of Veroks mod above backuped game. Set admin run onto exe files and start the game.

wrong error reference but in general, not matter

sry, cant replay-edit it, PCGW have issues with recaptha (recaptha itself is working correctly) First off why this error is appear - modifed exe indeed. GOG version should be good. No any else fixes applied. Or you probably have outdated KainGL (GOG version exe is modifed same as fan-made pacthes, latest KainGL should be compatible with GOG).

I've tested the GOG version with an Xbox One/Series X controller, and I can confirm that the right thumbstick button (press/click) opens the escape menu.

The issue with this controller is that the triggers share their function with Menu/View (Start/Select) buttons. This means that 2 buttons are effectively lost, making it harder to mimic the PSX layout. One solution I found is to bind the Quick Objects Menu (R2 on PSX) to the left thumbstick button, and the Eagle Eye (overhead map) to the right thumbstick button. The first press of RTB will open the escape menu, the second one will open the overhead map.
